Why Super Eagles Star Did Not Celebrate His UEFA Champions League Goal Last Night

According to a report by Premium Times on Thursday, October 22, 2026, Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen attracted considerable attention after refusing to celebrate his goal during Galatasaray’s impressive 4-2 victory over Lille in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night.

The Nigerian international scored in the 61st minute to help the Turkish champions secure their first victory of the competition this season. However, his reaction after finding the back of the net became one of the major talking points of the encounter.

Instead of celebrating with his teammates, Osimhen raised his hands towards the Lille supporters in what appeared to be a gesture of respect and appreciation.

The reason behind his decision was his previous relationship with the French club, where he enjoyed an important period of his professional career before becoming one of Europe’s most recognised strikers.

Osimhen represented Lille during the 2019/2020 season after joining from Belgian side Charleroi. During his time in France, the Nigerian forward established himself as an exciting attacking talent, scoring 18 goals in 38 appearances across all competitions.

His outstanding performances eventually earned him a transfer to Napoli in 2020, where he continued his development and later helped the Italian club win the Serie A title during the 2022/2023 campaign.

Returning to face Lille in the Champions League was therefore a special occasion for the 27-year-old, who still maintains a strong connection with the club and its supporters.

Speaking after Wednesday’s encounter, Osimhen acknowledged the importance of Lille in his career and expressed appreciation for the reception he received from the home supporters.

The Nigerian striker explained that returning to his former club was an emotional experience because of the positive memories he had during his time there.

Although he was delighted that Galatasaray secured all three points, he also expressed his affection for Lille and wished the French side success in their future matches.

Meanwhile, the encounter itself produced an entertaining contest, with both teams exchanging goals during the opening half.

Yunus Akgün handed Galatasaray an early advantage before Soriba Diaoune scored twice to put Lille ahead. Aleksey Batrakov subsequently restored parity before the interval.

Galatasaray regained control after the break and eventually established a 3-2 advantage before Osimhen scored the fourth goal to secure an important away victory.

The Super Eagles forward also received a warm reception from Lille supporters when he was substituted towards the closing stages of the match.

His impressive contribution earned him the Player of the Match award, further highlighting his importance to Galatasaray’s European ambitions.

Osimhen’s decision not to celebrate demonstrated that, despite the competitive nature of professional football, players can maintain considerable respect and affection for clubs that contributed to their development.

For the Nigerian international, Wednesday’s encounter was not simply about scoring another Champions League goal but also an opportunity to acknowledge a club that played a significant role in shaping his successful European career.
