Fulfilling APM’s Campaign Commitment: Chipungu announces 600-hectare land for Kasasile resettlement

Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development Chimwemwe Chipungu says government has identified a 600-hectare estate in Mpherembe, Mzimba District, where people displaced by the long-running Kasasile land dispute in Nkhata Bay will be resettled.

Chipungu made the announcement on Wednesday after joining Second Vice President Enock Kanzingeni Chihana in meeting the Kasasile community as government moves to bring the land dispute to an end.

He said the relocation fulfils President Arthur Peter Mutharika’s campaign commitment to the affected community.

Chipungu said his ministry had been engaging the Kasasile community and other stakeholders while searching for a suitable place for their resettlement.

He said allocation of plots at the new site will take place from October 5 to 10, 2026, while government will provide vehicles from October 26 to 30 to facilitate the relocation.

The minister said government expects the resettlement process to be completed by November 2026.

He added that he will personally visit the site during the first week of November to assess progress.

According to Chipungu, ministry officials inspected several estates before settling on the Mpherembe site, including Kapilisisi, Zgabhika, Dobadoba, Mubangwe and Katonthowolo estates.

He has urged the Kasasile community to continue working with the Ministry of Lands to ensure a safe and orderly resettlement.

Chipungu also warned that anyone who attempts to frustrate or unlawfully interfere with the process will face the full force of the law.

The development follows repeated concerns by Kasasile residents over delays in meetings with government to address their land grievances.
