Suspended Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS) Headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai, has revealed that the girl who accused him of rape is between 20 and 21 years old and has a child.
Mr Abdulai made the claim in an interview with radio host Blakk Rasta, while responding to reports of alleged sexual abuse involving female students of the school.
“I know she’s given birth. She has a child. She’s 20 to 21 years. But I cannot judge her; whether she’s bad or good. I cannot. But I have my story,” he said.
He said he had been cautioned by the police following a complaint by the accuser and her parents, adding that he had been granted self-recognisance bail and was awaiting court proceedings.
“I have been cautioned because one girl and her parents said I have raped her. So, they reported, I was cautioned, and as a headmaster I was given self-recognisance bail. I’m waiting for court days,” he said.
Mr Abdulai maintained that he had his own account of the events and said the committee that investigated the matter had heard both his account and that of the accuser and her relatives.

His comments follow a JoyNews investigation by Investigative Journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni, titled Inside the Dreaded Headmaster’s Bungalow, which highlighted allegations of sexual harassment, assault and rape involving female students of Obuasi SHTS.
According to a police account of the complaint, a 20-year-old Form Two student reported an alleged rape to the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) in Obuasi on August 4, 2026, accompanied by her father.
She alleged that the incident occurred on July 25, 2026, after she went to retrieve her dresses from a drying area near the headmaster’s official residence on campus. She told police that Mr Abdulai allegedly lured her into the residence on an errand before sexually assaulting her.
The police said the student also alleged that the headmaster gave her GH¢100 after the incident to keep quiet. These allegations have not been established in court.
The JoyNews investigation also reported that complaints involving other female students had been brought to the attention of school and education authorities months before Mr Abdulai’s suspension. The report detailed allegations involving several students and questions about how earlier complaints were handled.
The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, disclosed on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, that Mr Abdulai had been arrested in connection with the sexual misconduct allegations.
The police have since confirmed that the case docket relating to the complaint filed on August 4 has been forwarded to the Attorney-General for study and advice. Police have clarified that the docket concerns that individual complaint, while other allegations would require separate investigations.
Mr Abdulai has been interdicted by the Ghana Education Service (GES) pending investigations. The allegations have attracted national attention following the JoyNews investigation and calls for accountability and stronger safeguards for students.
Mr Abdulai, who also served as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Constituency Secretary for Juaben and had been seeking to contest for the constituency chairmanship, withdrew from the race amid pressure from within the party.
