Work on the dualisation of the Masvingo-Beitbridge Highway, including a bridge, an interchange and the tarring of some sections, has stalled after contractors abandoned their sites over non-payment by the government.
Speaking during a tour of government projects in Masvingo and Chivi districts on Wednesday, ProStruct Consulting Engineers representative Kudakwashe Dzimati said Masimba Construction, one of the biggest contractors on the project, abandoned its site and sent workers home on 2 July 2026.
ProStruct is a government consultancy for ongoing infrastructure development programmes.
The touring team included Minister of State Ezra Chadzamira and National Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning Secretary Fananai Madambi.
Dzimati warned that unless work already done is protected before the rainy season, there will be serious damage.
He said the projects most at risk if they are not secured before the rains are Chimusana Bridge across the Mucheke River in Masvingo, an interchange near Masvingo Polytechnic and the construction and widening of the road near Panyanda Lodges.
“It is critical and our desire is that we protect these works before the rainy season. We had serious issues at Panyanda detour during the last rainy season,” said Dzimati.
He said all contractors had planned to complete their current work before the rainy season.
Madambi promised to take up the matter with the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion.
“It’s not a good story because when people talk of the Beitbridge-Harare Road. What we can talk of is the Harare-Chirundu road because it’s supposed to be one project covering from Chirundu to Beitbridge,” he said.
