Driving Schools Face Arrests As Zimbabwe Safety Council Launches Nationwide Crackdown

Driving schools and instructors operating without the required documentation could soon find themselves in serious trouble as Zimbabwe’s Traffic Safety Council prepares to take action against non-compliant operators. The crackdown could also affect learners who are currently taking driving lessons at unregistered institutions.

The Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) has warned that offending driving schools face deregistration, while their owners and instructors risk arrest and prosecution.

The warning comes as the council steps up efforts to ensure that driving schools comply with regulations governing the industry.

According to the council’s communications officer, Lucy Kuwandira-Mapfumo, the organisation regularly conducts inspections to identify driving schools operating outside the established requirements.

She emphasised that the council would not hesitate to take action against those found violating the regulations.

“One of our functions is to register, regulate and monitor driving schools in our country. To that end, we frequently conduct driving school blitzes to ensure compliance within the sector,” she said.

Kuwandira-Mapfumo added that schools failing to meet the requirements could lose their registration, with owners and instructors facing prosecution.

Learners At Unregistered Driving Schools Could Also Be Affected

The crackdown could have consequences for learner drivers who enrol at non-compliant institutions.

The council warned that students receiving lessons from offending driving schools would automatically be disqualified from taking their Vehicle Inspectorate Department (VID) driving tests.

“Those found non-compliant will not be able to have their students tested at VID,” Kuwandira-Mapfumo explained.

She urged driving schools to ensure that their documentation and operations meet the required standards.

“Our aim is to protect the safety of future road users. We urge all driving schools to take this matter seriously and prioritise road safety in their operations,” she said.

Zimbabwe has approximately 500 registered driving schools.
