‘I Got Shs1.2bn, Not Shs10bn’: Gen. Sejusa Breaks Silence on ‘Modest’ UPDF Retirement Package

KAMPALA — Former Coordinator of Intelligence Services, Retired Gen. David Sejusa, has set the record straight regarding his military retirement package, dismissing widely circulated claims that he walked away with Shs 10 billion after 46 years of service.

In a rare personal disclosure posted on his X handle on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, the veteran Bush War commander revealed that his entire terminal package—including his pension—totaled Shs 1.2 billion, describing the amount as modest given his decades on the frontlines.

Sejusa was responding to a social media user who claimed he had received a Shs 10 billion windfall upon officially exiting the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).

> “10bn, hahaha! Let me break my Oath of not mentioning my personal things on X. My whole retirement package, pension etc, for 46 years of FIGHTING for Uganda was 1.2bn…ONE.. not TEN…,” Sejusa wrote, clarifying in a follow-up post that the figure was in Ugandan Shillings, not foreign currency.
>
He added that the payment was a one-off lump sum “which some people make in one day,” inviting anyone doubting the figure to cross-check records at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs as well as the Ministry of Finance.
Soldiers vs. Civilian VIPs

The outspoken retired general used the opportunity to draw a stark contrast between the retirement perks awarded to senior military officers and those lavished on high-ranking civilian public servants.

> “No medical cover, no Car, no House, no furniture, etc.. like they give those civilian retirees/Judges, Prime Minister, Vice…They even take them abroad for medical care, for us, NOTHING…!!” he posted.
>
Sejusa emphasized that after nearly half a century of active military service, many of his contemporaries who fought alongside him for 30 to 50 years retired with even smaller packages.
“That is the life of a soldier!!! PATRIOTS PAR EXCELLENCE….” he concluded.

THE BIG PICTURE

Sejusa’s comments come amid heightened public debate over executive retirement packages and statutory benefits for public officers in Uganda. Having undergone a protracted official discharge process from the UPDF alongside other senior Generals, his revelation highlights a long-standing sentiment among veteran combatants that military sacrifices yield significantly leaner terminal benefits compared to equivalent civilian roles.
