‘Justice has prevailed’ – Atta Akyea reacts to Baffour Awuah’s GH¢10m bail

Samuel Atta Akyea, lawyer for Manhyia South Member of Parliament Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, says justice has prevailed following the court’s decision to grant his client GH¢10 million bail.
The MP was granted bail with two sureties after pleading not guilty to three charges brought against him by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
Speaking after the court proceedings on Saturday, October 3, Mr Atta Akyea said the bail decision had secured the liberty of his client, whom he described as an “innocent man”.
“Today, I think the rule of law has prevailed, the liberty of a Member of Parliament and a loyal, honourable candidate has been secured as well. We are better off for it.”
He said the defence was not intimidated by the charges and was prepared to contest the prosecution’s case in court.
“We are not afraid of the charges as preferred against him. This is the formal way. There’s a difference between your theory and the evidential support you need to give, which the judge will then depend on, either to convict or acquit.”
Mr Atta Akyea maintained that the appropriate place to test the allegations was the court, where the prosecution would be required to present evidence to support its case.
“So we are in the proper forum. Whatever evidence they believe they have against a lawyer who’s worked for a client and is requesting money, and the client has made a commercial decision to settle, and there’s a shortfall on the account of a time balance for money, they should permit to criminality.”
He further said the defence was ready to face the prosecution in court and expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the proceedings.
“So we are ready for the fight, and I’m glad that today justice has prevailed. An innocent man who on his own volition walked into EOCO, was incarcerated for two nights, and the judge saw through the issues and said, prove your case.”
Baffour Awuah has pleaded not guilty to charges including conspiracy to commit a crime, dissipation of public funds and intentionally causing financial loss to the state. He has also denied a money laundering allegation relating to an alleged GH¢1 million transfer to the then Managing Director of SIC Life in 2024.
The two sureties for the GH¢10 million bail are the Member of Parliament for Bosome Freho, Nana Asafo-Agyei Ayeh, and the Member of Parliament for Effia, Isaac Boamah-Nyarko.
