Harambee Stars Allowances Paid After Players’ Training Boycott

The Ministry of Sports has confirmed the settlement of player allowances for the national football team, Harambee Stars, following reports that players boycotted training sessions ahead of their upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Eritrea.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya released a statement on Thursday, September 24, asserting that the ministry maintains consistent support for Harambee Stars and other national squads. The ministry facilitates team preparations, international travel, hotel accommodations, allowances, and technical support during assignments.

Ministry officials confirmed that the government has fulfilled its financial commitments regarding previous national team duties, including allowances accrued during international fixtures in Zambia, South Africa, and Turkey, alongside the Under-20 CECAFA assignment in Tanzania.

“We wish to clarify that, as of today, the Ministry has honored its financial commitments relating to previous assignments, including allowances for Harambee Stars engagements in Zambia, South Africa, Turkey, the Under-20 CECAFA assignment in Tanzania,” the Ministry stated.

The ministry has also cleared pending salaries for members of the Harambee Stars technical bench, disbursing funds through both the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) and direct payments to affected staff.

However, sports authorities acknowledged that processing remains underway for payments linked to more recent fixtures.

“Any payments relating to subsequent assignments that may still be pending are undergoing the requisite administrative processes in consultation with the Football Kenya Federation (FKF),” it added.

The government’s response follows widespread reports of player protests in camp, where squad members reportedly downed tools over delayed allowances and broader welfare concerns ahead of the international fixture.
