Greek Ambassador: Egypt-Greece ties offer strong foundation for partnership

Greek Ambassador to Egypt Nikolaos Papageorgiou said Egyptian-Greek relations represent an advanced model of strategic partnership rooted in a deep historical and civilizational legacy and longstanding human and cultural ties.

He added that relations between the two countries continue to develop, reflecting their commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation in ways that serve the interests of both peoples and support regional stability.

In exclusive remarks on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, to the Middle East News Agency (MENA) on the sidelines of the Mediterranean Offshore Conference and Exhibition at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Papageorgiou said ties between Cairo and Athens were built on solid historical and human foundations that had acquired renewed strategic significance over the centuries, establishing a strong basis for understanding and coordination across various fields.

He stressed that the challenges and transformations facing the region underscore the importance of partnerships built on mutual trust, shared interests and a long-term vision.

The ambassador said sustained communication, exchanges of visits and delegations, and growing political, economic and cultural cooperation reflected the vitality of bilateral relations and their ability to adapt to regional and international developments.

Cairo and Athens have promising opportunities to deepen cooperation and broaden their partnership, drawing on their shared strategic interests and pivotal positions in the Eastern Mediterranean, he added.

Papageorgiou noted that Egyptian-Greek relations extend beyond political and economic cooperation, deriving much of their strength from civilizational and human ties forged over centuries. These connections have built enduring bridges of understanding between the two peoples, giving the partnership a depth that transcends immediate interests and supports a more sustainable vision for the future.

Cooperation between the two countries also extends to vital sectors, including energy and electricity interconnection, he said, noting that their complementary capabilities offer opportunities to strengthen economic cooperation and expand connectivity between Egypt and Europe through Greece.

The ambassador added that Egypt and Greece possess complementary capabilities in the natural gas sector, creating further opportunities for cooperation and enhancing energy security in the region and Europe.

Papageorgiou described Alexandria as one of the most prominent living symbols of Egyptian-Greek ties, uniquely demonstrating how cities can embrace cultural diversity and create common ground between civilizations.

He noted that throughout its history, Alexandria has maintained a distinguished position as a center of science, knowledge, trade and human interaction.

Alexandria is not merely a testament to a shared history but also a living civilizational asset that can be built upon to promote cultural dialogue and understanding among peoples, he said. The city’s historical and human significance gives it an important role in supporting bilateral relations and strengthening their popular and cultural dimensions.

The ambassador said interaction between Egyptians and Greeks had continued across successive generations, with the Greek community in Egypt helping strengthen social and cultural ties. This has made relations between the two countries a model of coexistence and cultural exchange, as well as an important pillar of their contemporary partnership.

He expressed appreciation for initiatives and events highlighting Alexandria’s heritage, describing the preservation of its civilizational legacy and the promotion of its value among younger generations as a shared responsibility.

Such efforts also help strengthen Alexandria’s position on the international cultural map and open broader opportunities for cultural and tourism exchanges, he added.

Papageorgiou concluded that Egyptian-Greek relations have solid foundations for further development, supported by their shared history, strategic interests and close human ties. Building on these foundations would strengthen the bilateral partnership, broaden cooperation and reinforce both countries’ roles in promoting regional and international stability, understanding and integration.
