Parliament is set to re-establish its Institute of Parliamentary Studies to strengthen training, research and capacity building for Members of Parliament and staff, Speaker Rt. Hon. Jacob Marksons Oboth has said.
The Speaker made the announcement during a meeting with the new German Ambassador to Uganda, H.E. Sigrid Sommer, who paid a courtesy visit to Parliament.
“We are restarting our Institute for Parliamentary Studies to train, expose, and broaden the minds of our members and staff,” Speaker Oboth said.
He explained that the revived institute will serve as a central platform for professional development, research and capacity building within Parliament.
According to Speaker Oboth, the initiative will benefit from cooperation and technical support from the German Parliament under a planned Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
“Through cooperation with the German Parliament, we will learn and unlearn, adopt best practices, and strengthen parliamentary diplomacy,” he said.
The Speaker said the partnership would provide opportunities for Members of Parliament and parliamentary staff to gain exposure to international best practices while strengthening the institution’s capacity to effectively execute its legislative, oversight and representation mandates.
Ambassador Sommer welcomed the initiative, noting that parliamentary exchanges and institutional cooperation are mutually beneficial.
She said such engagements would also help Germany deepen its understanding of Uganda, Eastern Africa and the wider African continent.
The proposed cooperation is expected to further strengthen relations between Uganda and Germany through parliamentary diplomacy, knowledge exchange and institutional capacity building.
