Arsenal Make Mikel Arteta Premier League’s Highest-Paid Manager With £20m-a-Year Dynasty Deal

Mikel Arteta has agreed a new contract with Arsenal that will keep him at the club until 2030, extending his tenure beyond a decade and strengthening the manager’s position at the centre of the club’s long-term plans.

The agreement is understood to be worth around £20 million a year, making the Spaniard the highest-paid manager in the Premier League.

His previous deal, including bonuses, could reportedly have taken his annual earnings to around £15 million.

Arteta’s previous contract was due to expire next summer, but the new agreement removes uncertainty surrounding his position and gives him an extended mandate to continue developing Arsenal.

A Decade of Transformation

The 44-year-old arrived at Arsenal in December 2019 when the club were sitting 10th in the Premier League.

Since then, he has overseen a substantial rebuilding programme that has restored the Gunners to the top end of English football.

His tenure has included the end of Arsenal’s 22-year wait for a Premier League championship and a run to the Champions League final.

The club have also invested heavily in reshaping the squad and wider football operation under his leadership.

Arteta has become the longest-serving manager currently in the Premier League, placing him among a small group of coaches whose tenures have extended across major periods of change at their clubs.

Arsenal Target a New Winning Era

Arsenal’s hierarchy presented the new agreement as part of an ambition to establish a sustained period of success under Arteta.

Co-chairs Stan and Josh Kroenke described the manager’s time at the club so far as an “incredible journey” and said last season’s title success had created memories they wanted to build upon.

The pair also emphasised their desire to continue working with Arteta over the coming years as Arsenal seek to establish a prolonged period of success.

Chief executive Richard Garlick similarly described the contract as an important moment in the club’s history, saying Arsenal wanted to create a “winning era” alongside their manager.

Arteta Welcomes Long-Term Commitment

Arteta said he was proud to continue his relationship with Arsenal and expressed his appreciation for the trust shown by the club’s ownership and supporters.

The manager described Arsenal as a unique institution and said he felt privileged to continue the work that had already produced a strong bond between the club, its players and its supporters.

He also credited Stan and Josh Kroenke for their support and said he felt honoured to lead Arsenal through what he described as a special period in the club’s 140-year history.

Arteta’s Contract Among the Premier League’s Biggest

The financial terms place Arteta above several other highly paid Premier League managers.

Unai Emery, Andoni Iraola, Enzo Maresca and Roberto De Zerbi are understood to earn between approximately £10 million and £12 million annually, while Oliver Glasner is also reported to be close to that range.

Arteta’s new £20 million-a-year agreement therefore represents a substantial increase from his previous package and reflects the importance Arsenal have attached to his role.

A Changing Premier League Landscape

Arteta’s extension comes during a period of significant change among the Premier League’s leading clubs.

Manchester City have appointed Enzo Maresca following Pep Guardiola’s departure, while Andoni Iraola has replaced Arne Slot at Liverpool.

Chelsea have appointed Xabi Alonso, with Michael Carrick taking the permanent position at Manchester United.

Tottenham have also appointed Roberto De Zerbi, who took charge at the end of the 2025-26 campaign.

The managerial changes have altered the landscape in which Arteta is operating, while Manchester City’s legal difficulties over alleged breaches of Premier League financial regulations have added another major development to the competition at the top of English football.

From Guardiola Apprentice to Arsenal Architect

Arteta’s development as a manager has been closely linked to his relationship with Guardiola.

The pair first crossed paths when Arteta joined Barcelona’s academy in 1997, when Guardiola was a senior player and club captain.

Their professional relationship later developed at Manchester City, where Arteta worked as Guardiola’s assistant.

During his time at City, Arteta studied the methods of a manager whose team became one of the most dominant forces in English football.

He subsequently took those experiences to Arsenal and gradually established his own approach.

Their relationship has evolved over the years, but both remain connected through their shared footballing history.

Building Arsenal Around His Philosophy

When Arteta arrived in north London, Arsenal were struggling with internal problems, uncertainty among supporters and a squad that was some distance from challenging for the Premier League title.

The manager gradually changed the culture around the first team while gaining greater influence over areas extending beyond traditional coaching responsibilities.

His authority has grown to include significant involvement in recruitment, sports science and performance analysis, allowing his footballing philosophy to influence a broad section of Arsenal’s operation.

The club have backed that approach financially, with more than £900 million reportedly spent on player transfers during Arteta’s time in charge.

The Road From Near Misses to the Title

Arsenal’s progress was not immediate.

The team finished as Premier League runners-up in three successive seasons before finally securing the championship.

Those setbacks tested the project, but Arteta remained in position and continued to develop the squad.

His title success last season marked the culmination of almost seven years of rebuilding and gave Arsenal their first Premier League championship since 2004.

A Place Among Long-Serving Managers

The new contract will take Arteta beyond 10 years in charge of Arsenal, putting his tenure alongside some of the longest managerial spells in Premier League history.

Arsene Wenger spent 22 years at Arsenal, while Sir Alex Ferguson managed Manchester United for 27 years. Guardiola spent a decade at Manchester City, while Jurgen Klopp remained at Liverpool for nine years.

Arteta’s new agreement ensures that his own tenure will continue into a second decade and places him in the company of managers who have had extended opportunities to shape their clubs around a consistent footballing philosophy.

Arsenal Give Arteta Control for the Long Term

Arsenal’s decision to secure Arteta’s future reflects the central role he has played in rebuilding the club.

The new contract provides the manager with an extended period to continue the structure that has taken Arsenal from 10th place in 2019 to Premier League champions and Champions League finalists.

For Arteta, the agreement represents a continuation of a project that began almost seven years ago and has now entered a new stage with the manager firmly established at the Emirates Stadium.
