JOHANNESBURG - Police have begun assessing election readiness in Gauteng as preparations ramp up for the upcoming local government elections.
National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola says police are confident they can ensure a safe and peaceful election, while urging political parties and campaigners to exercise patience and respect everyone’s democratic right to campaign.
"All other provinces will follow, and we'll be able to measure how ready we are but indeed I know there has been a lot of preparation around this," he said.
"We are and will be in a position to deliver or to make sure that the elections take place in an environment that is conducive to a free and fair election."
