Safe Drinking Water Crisis Escalates in Gbonkonimah As The Only Public Hand Pump Fails

More than 700 residents of Gbonkonimah are facing a worsening safe drinking water crisis following the breakdown of the community’s only public hand pump, leaving families increasingly reliant on two privately owned pumps and unsafe, untreated wells.

The public hand pump, which served as the primary source of clean drinking water for the area, has remained out of service for approximately three months, sparking serious concerns over the lack of timely maintenance and intervention.

Community members estimate that roughly 60 percent of residents have been forced to rely on unprotected, hand-dug wells to meet their daily water needs. Local health advocates express growing alarm that many of these wells are untreated and exposed to contamination, significantly raising the risk of waterborne diseases across the population.

The failure of the public infrastructure has also placed intense pressure on the two remaining private hand pumps. Long queues routinely form early in the morning and persist for several hours. Many residents spend a major portion of their day waiting in line, while others, unable to lose valuable working hours, feel compelled to draw water from contaminated wells instead.

The situation has proven especially difficult for low-income households, families with small children, the elderly, and other vulnerable groups who lack the resources or time to secure clean water.

In response to the growing hardship, community leaders and residents are appealing to the Government of Liberia, international humanitarian organizations, non-governmental groups, and philanthropic individuals to urgently step in. They are calling for immediate repairs to the broken public pump and the construction of additional water points across Gbonkonimah.

For the people of Gbonkonimah, resolving this prolonged shortage is a critical priority to restore public health, relieve daily burden on families, and ensure basic access to clean drinking water.
