American Airlines Is Spending $4 Billion To Grow DFW While Shrinking How It Actually Operates

American Airlines is spending billions of dollars to expand Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), but it is also making one of the world's largest airline hubs operate in a very different way. The carrier is spreading the same enormous volume of flights across 13 smaller banks instead of nine larger ones, while adding more scheduled time to flights and investing in equipment that can keep aircraft at DFW when gates become unavailable. The result is a strategy that sounds contradictory: build more capacity while reducing the intensity of each peak.
