Western Cape disaster management teams are preparing for two days of disruptive weather, with heavy rain, strong winds and dangerous sea conditions expected to hit parts of the province from Thursday.
The South African Weather Service has issued a Level 4 warning for disruptive rainfall, with between 30mm and 45mm expected in parts of the Overberg and Garden Route.
The warning prompted a meeting of the provincial Joint Operations Committee on Tuesday, where forecasters briefed disaster management officials on the approaching weather system.
Strong winds are also expected across parts of the Cape Winelands, Central Karoo and Little Karoo, while high waves and hazardous sea conditions are forecast along much of the coastline.
Western Cape Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning MEC Anton Bredell said provincial authorities were in contact with municipalities and emergency services ahead of Thursday and Friday’s weather.
The Provincial Disaster Management Centre is monitoring the forecast with SAWS in case the system strengthens or conditions change.
The heavy rain could make roads and low-lying crossings dangerous, and residents have been warned not to attempt to cross flooded roads, bridges or low-water crossings.
Residents have also been urged to stay clear of rivers, streams and stormwater channels during periods of heavy rain.
Along the coast, rough seas and high waves could pose a danger, while residents in areas affected by strong winds have been advised to secure loose outdoor items.
Authorities said preparations would continue as the system approaches, with further warnings expected if the forecast changes.
