Devastating floods along the Nepal-China border have killed hundreds of people and left hundreds more missing, including foreign nationals from several countries, as rescue teams continue searching affected areas.
The disaster began Wednesday, Aug. 26, with severe flooding and landslides affecting communities on both sides of the border. Thousands of people have been rescued, while injured victims have been transported to hospitals in Kathmandu and several affected districts.
Nepal’s Disaster Management Authority reported Friday that at least 469 people had died and 977 remained missing. Authorities said 3,253 people had been rescued by air, while more than 150 injured victims were taken to hospitals in Kathmandu and the districts of Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading.
The number of missing people is expected to change as rescue operations continue and authorities receive updated information from affected communities.
Chinese state media reported Thursday that at least three people had died and 558 were missing in Gyirong County in Tibet, which borders Nepal. China Central Television reported that 260 of those missing were foreigners.
China’s Foreign Ministry also said about 100 Chinese nationals were missing on the Nepalese side of the border.
Several other countries have reported nationals missing in the disaster.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs said 288 Indian nationals remained unaccounted for. The U.S. State Department said 90 Americans were missing in Nepal and China, adding that no American deaths had been reported and three U.S. citizens had been rescued.
Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry said 55 Ukrainians were missing, while the Australian government reported 39 Australians missing.
The floods have affected areas frequented by foreign workers, tourists and religious visitors, including people traveling to Hindu pilgrimage sites.
Rescue operations remain underway, with authorities on both sides of the border working to locate missing people, evacuate survivors and provide medical assistance to those affected.
