ODM Announces ‘Mwezi wa Baba’ to Honour Raila Odinga

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) will mark the death of its founder and late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga throughout the month of October, one year after he passed away.

On Thursday, the party named the campaign “Mwezi wa Baba” and said it will hold a range of activities across the country to honor Raila’s contributions to Kenya’s democracy and Pan-Africanism.

In its programme announcement, ODM described Raila’s death as a painful moment for the party and its supporters, adding that the former prime minister left a lasting legacy for the nation.

ODM said in a public statement that Raila’s death left many people deeply heartbroken, adding that “God plucked the best flower from our midst.” The party said it has therefore dedicated the entire month of October to his memory.

Under the programme, ODM will begin its commemorations on October 2 with a nationwide candle-lighting ceremony. Supporters are expected to light candles individually or in groups at 6pm.

The party will then hold a major memorial rally in Kakamega Town on October 9, with supporters gathering from Kakamega, Vihiga, Busia, Bungoma, and Trans Nzoia counties.

From October 10 to 15, ODM will leave the memorial activities to Raila’s family. The schedule will conclude with the main memorial service at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi in Bondo.

The commemorations will then shift to northern Kenya, with a memorial rally planned for Garissa Town on October 17. The event will bring together ODM members and supporters from Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Isiolo and Marsabit counties.

ODM will also hold memorial activities along the coast on October 18 and 19 before joining Kenyans to mark Mashujaa Day on October 20.

The party then plans activities in Kajiado County on October 21, followed by memorial events in Turkana County from October 23 to 25.

ODM’s month-long programme will conclude with a major “Mwezi wa Baba” memorial rally in Nairobi County on October 31.

ODM has urged its supporters to use the commemorations to rededicate themselves to what it described as “Baba’s ideals.”
