I’m going to Russia for the Russia-Africa Summit and try to convince President Putin to have a cease

In an Official Facebook Post on 22 October 2026, media portal Ghanaian Perspective reported on international diplomatic declarations made by President John Dramani Mahama regarding the ongoing military conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Speaking ahead of the upcoming Russia-Africa Summit, President Mahama expressed his intention to use his high-level engagement with Russian President Vladimir Putin to advocate for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a return to peace negotiations.

Detailing his diplomatic mission ahead of the summit, President Mahama outlined his plan to engage the Russian leader directly on global peace and security concerns: “I’m going to Russia for the Russia-Africa Summit and try to convince President Putin to have a ceasefire if I can.” The announcement highlights the Ghanaian leader’s commitment to leveraging Ghana’s non-aligned diplomatic relations and international standing to contribute constructively toward ending one of the world’s most prolonged geopolitical crises.

The proposed diplomatic intervention comes against the backdrop of global economic disruptions caused by the Russia-Ukraine war, which has severely impacted food security, fertilizer supply chains, energy prices, and trade dynamics across African nations. The Russia-Africa Summit serves as a key multilateral platform where African heads of state engage Moscow on trade, security, and diplomatic cooperation. Mahama’s public commitment to raise the issue of a ceasefire demonstrates a desire among African leaders to proactively address the conflict’s global fallout rather than remain passive observers.

Observers note that President Mahama’s declaration reflects a bold, peace-oriented foreign policy stance, positioning Ghana as a constructive mediator in international diplomacy. By directly raising the prospect of a ceasefire with President Putin, the Ghanaian head of state joins a growing coalition of Global South leaders advocating for de-escalation, peaceful dialogue, and respect for international law.

At its core, the statement underscores the interconnected nature of modern geopolitics, where regional conflicts exert far-reaching economic consequences on developing nations. Mahama’s initiative emphasizes that pursuing a peaceful resolution in Eastern Europe is directly linked to stabilizing global commodity markets and easing economic pressures on African households.

The report by Ghanaian Perspective has generated widespread interest across foreign policy circles, media platforms, and social networks. Diplomatic analysts and citizens commended President Mahama for prioritizing global peace advocacy, acknowledging that while securing a ceasefire presents immense diplomatic hurdles requiring cooperation from all warring parties, exploring high-level diplomatic channels remains a worthy pursuit. Regardless of the outcome, the planned bilateral discussion highlights Ghana’s active participation in global peace efforts on the world stage.
