The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) is expanding economic opportunities across states of the federation and empowering thousands of citizens with skills and training through its NASENI Sustainable Empowerment Programme (NSEP).
Under the Renewed Hope Agenda, the Agency recently extended its NSEP to Lagos State, empowering 1,000 beneficiaries with clean energy solutions, livelihood support and practical skills training as part of efforts to deploy technology that directly improves the lives and economic opportunities for Nigerians.
The Lagos edition of the programme, held on Friday, 28th August 2026 at the LTV Blue Roof, Ikeja, featured the distribution of 400 NASENI Cookstoves, 100 NASENI Home Solar Solutions and NASENI Starter Packs, as well as practical skills training in Plaster of Paris (POP) installation and Electrical Maintenance.
The intervention is part of NASENI’s drive to take practical science, technology and engineering solutions beyond laboratories and factories into Nigerian homes, businesses and communities.
Speaking at the event, the Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NASENI, Mr. Khalil Suleiman Halilu, said the Lagos programme came a day after the Agency delivered a similar intervention in Ohafia, Abia State, and demonstrated NASENI’s determination to reach Nigerians across different parts of the country.
“Yesterday, we were in Ohafia, Abia State, delivering the same message through action. Today, we are here in Lagos. For us at NASENI, science, technology and engineering must ultimately improve lives. Innovation only becomes meaningful when it solves real problems for real people,” Halilu said.
He explained that the NASENI Cookstoves are designed to provide cleaner and more efficient cooking alternatives, helping households reduce dependence on traditional cooking methods while contributing to Nigeria’s transition towards cleaner energy. The NASENI Home Solar Solutions are also designed to provide households and small businesses with reliable renewable energy options that can extend productive hours and support economic activities.
The Lagos edition was deliberately designed to go beyond the distribution of products by incorporating practical, market-relevant skills development in POP installation and Electrical Maintenance. These are practical skills with immediate economic value. The objective is not simply to train people, but to give them skills they can convert into services, businesses and sustainable sources of income.
The NSEP programme is designed to ensure that beneficiaries move from learning to earning, and from receiving support to becoming productive economic participants. This intervention is an investment in the productive capacity of the people and to make effective use of both the products and skills provided.
“Our real measure of success is what happens after today. Are households benefiting? Are people reducing their energy challenges? Are those trained earning from their new skills? Are small businesses being created or expanded? Those are the outcomes that matter to us,” Halilu said.
Member representing Surulere I Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Fuad Kayode Laguda, who represented the Chief of Staff to the President, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, commended NASENI for bringing the programme to Lagos State.
Hon. Laguda described the combination of practical skills development and empowerment products as an important demonstration of the Federal Government’s commitment to translating policies and programmes into tangible opportunities for Nigerians. He called for the expansion of the programme to reach more communities and beneficiaries across Lagos State.
Also speaking, the Chairman, Governing Board, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Chief Idris Ibikunle Olorunnimbe, represented by Chairman of Ikeja Local Government, Hon. Akeem Dauda, commended NASENI for the intervention, particularly its focus on clean energy, skills development and sustainable livelihoods, also urged beneficiaries to make productive use of the opportunities provided.
Similarly, the Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Finance, Hon. James Abiodun Faleke, represented by Executive Chairman of Ikosi-Isheri LCDA, Hon. Princess Samiat Abolanle Bada, described the programme as a practical demonstration of government interventions reaching citizens.
Through NSEP, NASENI is providing Nigerians with practical technologies, relevant skills and livelihood support while demonstrating how science, technology and engineering can translate into jobs, enterprise, cleaner energy, improved productivity and better livelihoods.
Reflecting on the successful empowerment scheme in Abia state, the NASENI boss noted that not less than 250 indigenes of Asaga, Ohafia in Abia State benefited from the ongoing NSEP, which took place on Thursday, 27th August, 2026 in the state.
NASENI through NSEP is providing relevant skills, tools and renewable technologies including NASENI Home Solar Solutions (solar fan, panel, power bank), Cookstoves, etc. that would help beneficiaries become more productive, build sustainable livelihoods and participate meaningfully in the growing innovation-driven economy.
The Agency’s presence in Abia State was particularly significant as the state has long been recognised for its enterprise, creativity, manufacturing culture and the determination of its people to create value, which will ultimately transform the people, while appreciating the beneficiaries and everyone present at the flag-off ceremony for their patience and understanding.
The idea behind NSEP is to make technology and engineering move beyond laboratories and institutions and translate into practical solutions that will improve livelihoods, create opportunities and strengthen communities. Through this programme, NASENI is directly touching the lives of Nigerians, providing relevant skills, tools and technologies that can help people become more productive, build sustainable livelihoods and participate meaningfully in Nigeria’s growing innovation-driven economy.
The exercise in Abia State was particularly significant, as the state has long been recognised for its enterprise, creativity, manufacturing culture and the determination of its people to create value. These qualities strongly align with the new NASENI, an institution focused on Creation, Collaboration and Commercialisation (3Cs).
Under NASENI’s strategic direction, the agency is moving from research for its own sake to solutions that people can use, businesses can adopt and industries can scale.
The NSEP is an important part of NASENI’s journey as innovation only becomes meaningful when its impact reaches the people. The agency has maintained that the beneficiaries, the support and the support they receive are not simply a handout. The agency makes it an opportunity and an investment in productive capacity.
This investment in Abia will most likely succeed as it will create value from it, improve livelihoods and, where possible, create opportunities for others. Another important aspect of this project in Abia is that it has created a mechanism for measuring the impact of these interventions.
NASENI’s success is not simply the number of programmes organised or items distributed, but it believes that success is the number of lives improved, businesses strengthened, jobs supported and communities made more productive.
In his goodwill message, Managing Director, Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI), Dr. Armstrong Ume Takang, appreciated NASENI for bringing NSEP to his hometown, adding that the programme is an assurance that the present administration is doing everything possible to ensure that Nigerians feel the impact of good governance, create job opportunities and self-reliance.
He, however, called for further relationship with NASENI to enable the collaboration, which according to him, has started with the flag-off ceremony of NSEP in Ohafia, to enable the youths from Abia state improve more on the potentials they already have. Other states of the Federation are billed to benefit from this empowerment scheme as the Renewed Hope Agenda traverses all the nooks and crannies of the country.
