Level 2 severe thunderstorm warning issued for KwaZulu-Natal on Monday

The South African Weather Service has issued a yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms across KwaZulu-Natal on Monday, 21 September.

Heavy downpours, hail and excessive lightning could lead to localised flooding and damage to infrastructure and settlements, according to the forecast.

Morning fog is expected over the KwaZulu-Natal interior before partly cloudy and cool to warm conditions. Scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms are forecast. Coastal winds are expected to shift from north-easterly to south-westerly from the south during the day.

Extreme fire danger in part of Northern Cape

Extremely high fire-danger conditions are expected in the Nama-Khoi Municipality in the Northern Cape.

Most other provinces are forecast to experience cloud or isolated showers. Gauteng, North West and the Free State can expect isolated showers and thundershowers, while rain and drizzle are possible in parts of Mpumalanga and Limpopo.

In the Eastern Cape, morning coastal fog is possible before showers and thunderstorms develop over parts of the interior. The western half could see scattered storms in the north-east.

The west of the Western Cape is expected to remain fine. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are forecast for the north-east of that province, with fresh to strong south-easterly winds along parts of the coast.

The Weather Service expects a high ultraviolet index in Gauteng, the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. No separate weather advisories were issued with the forecast.

Residents in warning areas should monitor updates from the Weather Service and local disaster-management authorities as conditions develop. Motorists should take extra care where heavy rain reduces visibility or water collects on roads.
