Zimbabwe Spinners Association pays tribute to late “spinner” Thulani Nkala

The Zimbabwe Spinners Association (ZISA) Bulawayo Province Chapter has paid tribute to late “spinner” Thulani Nkala, who died following a motor-spinning accident at the Pharos Spinning Arena in Tshabalala on August 30.

Nkala, who was from Tshabalala Suburb, reportedly sustained severe head injuries after falling from a moving BMW during a burnouts exhibition at the arena.

Police confirmed the death, with the incident sending shockwaves through the motor-spinning fraternity and leaving members of the community mourning the loss of one of their own.

In a statement, ZISA Bulawayo Province Chapter, chaired by Zakhele “Zakes” Mlilo, expressed its condolences to Nkala’s family, friends and everyone who knew him.

“On behalf of the Zimbabwe Spinners Association, our members, and the wider motor-spinning community, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the Nkala family, his friends, and all those who knew and loved him during this difficult and painful time,” said the association.

ZISA described Nkala’s death as a tragic loss to the motor-spinning community and said it was working with event promoters and the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) as investigations into the incident continue.

The association also urged members of the public and other stakeholders to allow the relevant authorities to complete their investigations before drawing conclusions about the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

“ZISA is currently working closely with the event promoters and the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC). We are also awaiting the conclusion of the police investigations and all relevant formalities.

“We therefore urge the public and all stakeholders to allow the appropriate authorities to complete their investigations before conclusions are drawn regarding the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident,” the statement reads.

Nkala’s death has also brought safety at motor-spinning events into sharp focus, with ZISA reaffirming its commitment to the safety of participants, spectators and officials.

The association said it would continue working with authorities and event organisers to review and strengthen safety measures and protocols at future events.

“While we mourn this tragic loss, we stand together with the Nkala family and the entire motor-spinning community during this difficult time. May the soul of Mr. Thulani Nkala rest in peace,” reads the statement.

Nkala is set to be buried tomorrow.
