BRIEFING | Mundubile, Makebi, 16 others transferred to Mukobeko Maximum Prison
National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity presidential candidate Brian Mundubile, his 2026 running mate Makebi Zulu and 16 other accused persons have been transferred to Mukobeko Maximum Security Prison in Kabwe as the treason case against them progresses.
Lawyer Milner Katolo said the 18 were moved on August 30 from various detention facilities where they had been held following their arrests.
Mundubile and Zulu were taken into police custody last week after investigators recorded warn-and-caution statements from them in connection with alleged treason. Their detention followed several days at United Nations premises in Lusaka before Zambia’s eight Church Mother Bodies facilitated their transition to their legal representatives for the commencement of legal processes.
The wider case stems from an ongoing national security investigation involving allegations of an illegal militia, weapons and suspected foreign-linked military activities. Authorities have previously said the investigation predates the August 13 general election.
The investigation intensified following the August 14 security operation at Mundubile’s Kabulonga residence, where former Cabinet minister Mutotwe Kafwaya was shot dead. Eleven people were initially apprehended and police reported recovering firearms, ammunition and tactical equipment from the premises. Mundubile has rejected allegations that a militia existed.
Katolo said the 18 accused persons are facing treason charges but have not yet appeared before court in connection with the matter.
He further said the defence team had been informed that lawyers would only be permitted to meet their clients after September 2.
The transfer places the accused at Zambia’s highest-security correctional facility as attention turns to their first court appearance and the formal presentation of the State’s case.
