Mamelodi Sundowns Legend Manqoba Mngqithi Sacked After Disastrous African Nightmare

CONFIRMED: Young Africans Part Ways With Manqoba Mngqithi After Dropping Crucial Points

Young Africans SC have officially parted ways with South African coach Manqoba Mngqithi following a disappointing result in the Tanzanian Premier League on Saturday, October 24, 2026, bringing an unexpected end to his spell at one of East Africa’s biggest football clubs.

The decision comes after the defending champions were held to a goalless draw by TRA United at Sheikh Amri Abeid Stadium in Arusha. The result proved costly for Yanga, who are determined to defend their domestic crown while also pursuing success in continental football.

According to reports from Tanzania, the club confirmed the termination of Mngqithi’s contract, signalling a major change in the technical department as pressure mounted following a difficult run of league results.

Mngqithi arrived at Young Africans in July 2026 with considerable experience gained from his years in South African football, particularly during his successful association with Mamelodi Sundowns. His appointment was viewed as an important step towards strengthening Yanga’s domestic dominance and improving their chances of competing for the CAF Champions League title.

However, the latest developments suggest that the club’s leadership was dissatisfied with the team’s recent league performances.

Saturday’s draw followed a 2-1 defeat against bitter rivals Simba SC in the Kariakoo Derby. Those consecutive setbacks left Yanga five points behind league leaders Simba after eight matches, increasing concerns about their ability to maintain their position in the title race.

Despite the disappointing results, Mngqithi’s overall record during his short tenure was not entirely negative. The South African tactician guided Yanga to six league victories, one draw and one defeat before the latest stalemate. Across 13 matches in all competitions, his team recorded 10 wins, two draws and one loss.

He also helped the club secure qualification for the CAF Champions League group stages after an impressive 8-1 aggregate victory over CFFA. Furthermore, Mngqithi began his tenure by guiding Yanga to a 1-0 victory over Simba SC in the Tanzanian Community Shield.

These achievements make his departure a significant development for both Tanzanian and South African football.

Nevertheless, expectations at Young Africans remain exceptionally high, with supporters demanding consistent performances and silverware. The club has established itself as a major force in Tanzania and will be eager to prevent its rivals from gaining further ground in the championship race.

Attention will now turn to who takes responsibility for the team following Mngqithi’s exit and whether the club will appoint an interim coach or immediately begin searching for a permanent replacement.

For Mngqithi, the sudden departure marks another unexpected chapter in a coaching career built on years of experience at the highest level of South African football.

His next move will be closely watched, particularly by supporters who remember his contribution to Mamelodi Sundowns’ success and his reputation as an experienced tactician in African football.

Young Africans, meanwhile, must quickly regroup and restore their winning momentum if they are to keep their domestic ambitions on track.
