Illegal parking returns to Pokuase Interchange as commercial drivers defy enforcement

Commercial drivers have resumed picking up passengers along the highway near the Pokuase Interchange in Accra, raising fresh concerns about road safety and the enforcement of traffic regulations.
An Adom TV reporting team, led by reporter Prince and camera technician Nathanial Amartey, observed several commercial vehicles stopping to pick up passengers at the location, which is not a designated bus stop.
Some drivers reportedly fled the scene upon seeing the journalists filming, while others remained to explain their actions.
When questioned about why they continued to pick up passengers along the highway, some drivers pleaded for leniency, while others attempted to justify the practice.
One driver, who claimed to have about 30 years of experience parking along the highway, said he was not afraid of the possibility of an accident occurring.
The practice has raised concerns about the safety of passengers, pedestrians and other road users, as vehicles stopping at unauthorised points along busy highways could expose commuters to accidents and other dangers.
The development comes about two months after an earlier report by Adom TV prompted the Ga North Municipal Assembly to deploy a task force to address the illegal parking and passenger-loading activities in the area.
However, the return of commercial drivers to the location raises questions about the sustainability of the enforcement measures and whether further action is needed to prevent a recurrence.
The situation also highlights the challenges authorities face in ensuring compliance with traffic regulations and maintaining safety around major road infrastructure such as the Pokuase Interchange.
