Ghana Jollof case: Salomey Awiti Baffoe reunites with family after GH¢100,000 bail

AI summary
Senior Nursing Officer and mother of three, Salomey Awiti Baffoe, has reunited with her family after being granted GH¢100,000 bail in connection with the ongoing case involving social media personality Barbara Asantewaa Kodua, popularly known as ‘Ghana Jollof’.
Salomey, 40, was arrested at her home in Hansua near Techiman in September and subsequently charged with abetment of crime, to wit, publication of false news. She has pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Speaking to Adom News following her release, Salomey’s uncle, Kojo Asiedu, said the family was relieved to have her back home but remained concerned about her health.
He said although she appeared well, the family was yet to have her examined by a medical specialist to determine her condition and ensure that she was in stable health.
Mr Asiedu said he personally brought Salomey back from Accra and expressed gratitude to the media for helping the family establish her whereabouts during the period of her detention.
He said the family initially feared that Salomey had been kidnapped because of the manner in which she was taken from her home.
According to him, the family only learnt where she was being held after media investigations helped establish that she was in police custody.
Mr Asiedu said Salomey’s return had brought immense relief and happiness to the family, particularly her children who had not seen their mother for some time.
He described the reunion as an emotional moment, saying Salomey’s children welcomed their mother with joy after her return.
He added that Salomey’s mother had also been deeply affected by her absence and had stopped eating, but regained her appetite after seeing her daughter.
Mr Asiedu further appealed to the government and security agencies to ensure that proper procedures are followed when making arrests.
He said the circumstances surrounding Salomey’s arrest had frightened the family and warned that such methods could potentially be exploited by criminals posing as security personnel.
“We are looking forward to the government, if possible, not allow such a situation to happen again,” he said.
He added that the family would arrange for Salomey to undergo medical examinations to determine whether there were any health concerns following her detention.
The case against Salomey stems from her alleged links to Barbara Asantewaa Kodua, popularly known as ‘Ghana Jollof’. Police allege that Salomey acted as a liaison and helped recruit people to redistribute videos produced by Ms Kodua on social media platforms.
The allegations have not been established in court.
Salomey has pleaded not guilty to the charge and remains entitled to the presumption of innocence as the case proceeds.
