Sprint kings return from Budapest to a payday

QUOTE – A historic gold, a silver, and a government ready to pay up: how a small southern African nation is turning athletics glory into cold, hard cash – and betting on its future.

There are no ticker-tape parades in Gaborone, no motorcades winding through the capital’s wide avenues. But when Botswana’s athletes touched down from Budapest this month, they returned to something arguably more practical: a checkbook.

The inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship had barely concluded in Hungary before the Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) confirmed what many in the country had been waiting to hear; the revised national performance incentive package would apply, and the rewards would be substantial.

At the center of it all stood Busang Collen Kebinatshipi, the newly crowned 400-meter champion, whose legs carried him to a gold medal and whose government is now carrying him to the bank. Kebinatshipi will receive P150,000 from the state for his triumph – a sum that, combined with the US$150,000 (roughly P2.02 million) prize from World Athletics itself, makes his Budapest weekend the kind of financial windfall that redefines a career.

Not far behind was Letsile Tebogo, the Olympic 200-meter champion whose star has been rising with the inevitability of a desert sunrise. Tebogo claimed silver in the 200 meters and placed seventh in the 100 meters, earning P100,000 and P20,000 respectively from the government incentive scheme – a combined P120,000. World Athletics, meanwhile, handed him US$75,000 (about P1.05 million) for the silver and another US$12,000 (P161,385) for the 100-meter result. Not a bad haul for three days of work.

But this is not merely a story about two decorated sprinters cashing in. It is a story about a nation – small, determined, and increasingly visible on the global track – that has chosen to put its money where its medals are.

The mechanism is the BNSC’s Performance Incentives and Rewards Package, first introduced in 2012 and recently overhauled in ways that could reshape Botswana’s sporting future. The original policy was straightforward: reward excellence, motivate athletes, and ensure that those who bring glory home could also bring home a living. The revision, however, does something more ambitious; it extends the umbrella to include younger athletes, those still finding their stride on the junior circuit.

Under the new framework, athletes competing in Under-23, Under-20, and Under-17 national teams can now qualify for incentives at continental and world-level competitions. It is, in essence, a down payment on potential; a recognition that the pipeline matters as much as the podium.

“Everything which the revised BNSC incentive policy says will apply,” Anderson Nlisa, the commission’s marketing and communications manager, told WeekendSport, confirming that the Ultimate Championship carries the same incentive weight as the World Athletics Championships. The message is unmistakable: Budapest was no exhibition. The medals are real, and so is the money.

And the money, it turns out, goes well beyond the two headliners. All six athletes who qualified for the Ultimate Championship – Kebinatshipi, Tebogo, Bayapo Ndori, Lee Bhekempilo Eppie, Oratile Nowe, and Kemorena Tisang – will each receive a P20,000 qualification incentive plus a P4,000 appearance fee. That means simply making the team, simply standing on the starting line in Budapest wearing Botswana’s colors, carries its own reward.

Then there are the coaches – the architects behind the explosiveness. Chippa Ntshwarang, who guided Kebinatshipi to the 400-meter title, will collect P25,000. Dose Mosimanegape, who shaped Tebogo’s silver-medal performance, will receive the same. The policy’s architects understood something essential: behind every record-breaking sprint is a coach who arrived before dawn and stayed after dark.

All of this arrives at a moment when Botswana’s athletics program is producing results that command the world’s attention. Kebinatshipi’s gold and Tebogo’s double-medal performance did not happen in a vacuum; they are the harvest of years of investment, structural reform, and an institutional willingness to treat sport not as recreation but as a national enterprise.

For the BNSC, however, the incentive program is designed to achieve something larger than celebrating established stars. By folding junior athletes into the reward structure, the commission is gambling on a thesis: that financial recognition, even modest, at an early age can keep talented teenagers in the sport, accelerate their climb to senior competition, and ultimately swell the ranks of professional athletes that this nation of 2.4 million people sends into the world.

It is a bet that a country with a population smaller than many cities can continue to produce runners who outrun the odds. Budapest suggests they may be right.
