The United States and Mozambique are deepening their bilateral economic partnership with the creation of a dialogue mechanism aimed at removing barriers to trade, attracting investment and opening up new opportunities for businesses in both countries.
The first meeting of the US-Mozambique Bilateral Economic and Trade Working Group was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, bringing together US Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Abigail L. Dressel and representatives of the Mozambican government.
The new forum aims to put trade and investment at the centre of bilateral relations, seeking to identify obstacles that hinder business activity and find solutions to facilitate the entry and expansion of US and Mozambican companies in each other’s markets.
The creation of the group represents a commitment to strengthening economic cooperation between the two countries at a time when Washington and Maputo are seeking to turn high-level diplomatic contacts into concrete results for the private sector.
The mechanism’s priorities include expanding bilateral trade, promoting investment and identifying barriers to business activity.
The intention is to create a more favourable environment in which companies from both countries can invest, establish partnerships and explore new business opportunities.
More than a forum for discussion, the group is intended to serve as a platform for bringing governments and businesses closer together and finding responses to constraints that could limit the growth of economic relations.
The move follows President Daniel Chapo’s visit to the United States in October 2025 and subsequent high-level contacts in the field of commercial diplomacy.
Those contacts paved the way for a new approach to economic relations between Maputo and Washington, with a greater focus on creating business opportunities and deepening investment.
The establishment of the bilateral group is therefore one of the steps intended to follow up on that understanding and turn political rapprochement into economic results.
For Mozambique, stronger economic ties with the United States could create opportunities to access investment, technology, expertise and new markets.
“For US companies, the country presents opportunities in different areas of the economy, while Mozambican companies could benefit from greater access to the US market and private sector,” said US Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Abigail L. Dressel.

The new platform is expected to enable the two governments to identify priority sectors and work towards removing obstacles that could hinder investment and trade.
The expectation is that economic cooperation will no longer be limited to diplomatic meetings but will produce more visible results on the ground through business deals, investment and corporate partnerships.
With the first meeting of the Bilateral Economic and Trade Working Group, the United States and Mozambique are seeking to usher in a new phase in their economic relationship, based on more structured and results-oriented dialogue.
After the meeting, the parties acknowledged that the challenge would be to turn intentions into concrete measures capable of facilitating trade, reducing barriers and stimulating investment.
