According to SAWS, thunderstorms could develop across Mpumalanga and become severe in places over the Lowveld and escarpment.
The weather service has also identified affected areas on its warning map, which covers parts of Mpumalanga and extends into the neighbouring region.
The affected areas include Mbombela, Nkomazi, Thaba Chweu, Chief Albert Luthuli, Msukaligwa and Emakhazeni in Mpumalanga.
What can residents expect?
SAWS warns that heavy downpours could cause flash flooding, particularly in low-lying areas and places where roads and bridges are vulnerable to flooding.
Strong, gusty winds and hail could also damage infrastructure, informal settlements, vehicles and property.
The weather service says lightning could disrupt municipal services, while the storms could also affect livestock and people’s livelihoods.
Staying safe during severe storms
Residents should monitor weather updates and avoid crossing flooded roads or bridges.
Motorists should slow down during heavy rain, particularly when visibility drops or water collects on roads.
People outdoors should seek shelter in a substantial building when thunderstorms approach and avoid open areas during lightning.
SAWS advises residents to follow its latest warnings as weather conditions change.
