Ghana TVET Service, UNESCO, KPMG, Microsoft to train 100,000 facilitators in AI, digital skills

The Ghana TVET Service has signed a strategic partnership with UNESCO, KPMG and Microsoft to train at least 100,000 Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) facilitators in artificial intelligence (AI) and digital skills.

The partnership, signed under the AI EmpowerED initiative at the Ghana TVET Service headquarters in Accra, is aimed at accelerating the integration of artificial intelligence and digital innovation into Ghana’s TVET system.

The initiative is expected to strengthen the capacity of TVET facilitators to deliver future-ready skills, improve teaching and learning, expand digital access and promote the responsible use of emerging technologies.

The Ghana TVET Service said the rapid transformation of workplaces and learning environments has created an urgent need to equip facilitators with new digital competencies.

It noted that workshops, laboratories and other training facilities are increasingly being influenced by evolving technologies, while employers are demanding skills that respond to automation and intelligent systems.

The Service also highlighted risks associated with the use of AI in education, including plagiarism, misinformation, algorithmic bias and the improper handling of learner data.

Under the agreement, the Ghana TVET Service will lead national implementation, support institutional readiness and integrate AI-enabled teaching and learning approaches into TVET delivery.

The initiative will also support curriculum enhancement, strengthen instructor capacity and facilitate the deployment of digital tools in selected institutions.

UNESCO will provide policy leadership and technical oversight to ensure that the programme aligns with international standards and best practices.

KPMG will support programme design and systems strengthening, with a focus on efficiency, scalability and measurable impact, while Microsoft will provide digital infrastructure and AI-powered solutions to support teaching, learning and institutional performance.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Director-General of the Ghana TVET Service, Engr. Dr Eric Kofi Adzroe, said the partnership represented a shift towards a TVET system that is aligned with industry and driven by technology.

“Technical and vocational education cannot remain static in a rapidly changing world. This partnership represents a clear shift towards a system that is aligned with industry, powered by technology and focused on outcomes,” he said.

Dr Adzroe said strengthening the capacity of facilitators would help build a workforce equipped not only for current demands but also for the direction of the global economy.

The Deputy Director-General in charge of Management Services, Abdul Fatah Maigah Mahama, said AI would increasingly influence how young people learn and work, making it important to prepare facilitators to use the technology responsibly.

He said teachers and trainers must be equipped to assess AI-generated information, protect learner data and guard against biases associated with artificial intelligence.

The partnership is also expected to create opportunities for youth employment, entrepreneurship and innovation by ensuring that TVET graduates acquire relevant and future-oriented skills.

The Ghana TVET Service said implementation would be carried out in collaboration with government agencies, industry partners and development organisations to ensure coordination, sustainability and nationwide impact.
