Crime Intelligence Major General Feroz Khan has been subpoenaed to appear before the Madlanga Commission on Tuesday.
Khan was reportedly readmitted to hospital.
Commission spokesperson Jeremy Michaels confirmed that Khan is expected to appear, saying officials remain in contact with his legal counsel.
Meanwhile, the commission has opened a case against North West ANC member Suliman Carrim after he repeatedly failed to appear before the inquiry.
Michaels said the case was opened last week by the commission’s secretary.
Carrim has failed to attend several scheduled appearances before the commission.
The latest developments come as the inquiry continues to investigate allegations of political interference and other matters relating to policing and organised crime.
This is a developing story.
