Bad News for Kenyans as Unexpected Announcement Arrives from the US Ahead of 2027 — Details

The United Kingdom has announced major changes to its permanent residency rules, bringing new challenges for foreign nationals, including thousands of Kenyans living and working in the country.

On Monday, November 2, 2026, the UK government unveiled its new Earned Settlement model, which will change how migrants qualify for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), the status that allows foreigners to live permanently in Britain.

Under the new framework, most migrants will have to wait 10 years instead of the previous five years before qualifying for permanent residency.

Here are seven major changes Kenyans should know.

First, the standard waiting period will increase from five to 10 years for most migrants.

Second, high earners making more than £50,271 annually may qualify after three years.

Third, doctors, nurses and teachers working in public services may retain a five-year settlement route.

Fourth, eligible care workers who respected their visa conditions and earn at least £25,000 annually will also qualify after five years.

Fifth, migrants who have breached immigration rules could face a waiting period of at least 20 years before qualifying.

Sixth, people who entered Britain illegally through small boats or other hidden routes could face up to 30 years before settlement.

Seventh, all applicants must meet stricter conditions, including having a clean criminal record, speaking English to a high standard, clearing debts owed to the government and showing sustained National Insurance contributions.

The announcement is particularly important for Kenyans who moved to Britain for employment, education and better opportunities.

However, the government has clarified that people who already hold permanent settlement will not lose their status under the reforms.

The changes form part of Britain’s wider efforts to control immigration and reward migrants who contribute to the country’s economy and society.

The Home Office is expected to publish further technical guidance explaining how the new system will be implemented.

For Kenyans hoping to settle in Britain, the big question is whether they will qualify under the new conditions.
