Stellenbosch FC hand midfielder another chance as Matsheke returns with unfinished business

Sibongiseni Matsheke has returned to Stellenbosch FC, giving the midfielder another opportunity to rebuild his career.

The 2023/24 season saw Matsheke make his first appearance for the Winelands club.

He quickly became part of a memorable campaign that ended with Carling Knockout success.

Stellenbosch faced TS Galaxy in the final and eventually needed penalties to decide the winner.

Matsheke stepped forward under pressure and converted the decisive penalty.

His contribution helped the Maroons claim the trophy after a tense shootout.

The midfielder made 12 appearances across all competitions during that campaign.

Matsheke takes a long route back

Matsheke’s football journey began in Chiawelo, Soweto, before Kaizer Chiefs provided his breakthrough.

The midfielder progressed through the club’s youth system and reached the senior team during 2020/21.

He later joined Uthongathi FC and Moroka Swallows on loan to gain valuable first-team experience.

After leaving Kaizer Chiefs permanently, Matsheke joined Stellenbosch FC as a free agent.

His first spell ended in March 2024 following an internal code of conduct transgression.

Stellenbosch FC subsequently terminated his contract, bringing his promising spell to an unexpected end.

Matsheke then continued his career with Pretoria Callies and Kruger United.

He later returned to top-flight football with Marumo Gallants during the 2025/26 campaign.

However, that chapter also ended sooner than expected.

Matsheke and Marumo Gallants eventually agreed to part ways after he fell outside the coach’s plans.

Now, the midfielder has returned to familiar surroundings and another chance with Stellenbosch FC.

Matsheke eyes unfinished business

Matsheke revealed that his return caught him by surprise, but he welcomed the opportunity.

“It feels great to be back at Stellenbosch FC,” Matsheke said. “It was unexpected, but I am really happy to be here.”

The midfielder also expressed his appreciation for the club and coach.

He now wants to reproduce his previous impact while helping Stellenbosch compete for more silverware.

“I want to pick up where I left off on the field and help the team compete for more,” he added.

Matsheke also believes his return gives him an opportunity to address unfinished business.

“I missed out on the opportunity to play in Africa last time, so there’s a bit of unfinished business, but this is a second chance for me to do more and achieve those goals.”

The midfielder will wear the No. 31 shirt during the new season.

He could make his second Stellenbosch FC debut this weekend.

The Maroons are scheduled to face Kruger United in the Betway Premiership.
