“Over 40 Officers Dismissed Over Corruption, Financial Fraud Since Assuming Office” – EFCC Chair

The chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, on Monday, said that under his leadership, staff of the anti-graft agency living lavish lifestyles are investigated while more than 40 have been dismissed for involvement in corruption and financial fraud.

The anti-corruption agency czar said in a post on X on Monday, “In under three years, I have dismissed over 40 staff for corruption and financial malpractice. More than five are already being prosecuted, with more case files in preparation. Those cases are in open court — you can follow them.”

He highlighted his efforts to sanitise the EFCC and rid it of corrupt staff over the past three years, asking, “If I investigate and prosecute people in other MDAs for this, why would I merely dismiss my own?”

“When I resumed, the reports were there: operatives driving Range Rovers, living in Maitama. So we asked them directly — where did the house come from? The car? ‘A gift from my brother abroad.’ Fine. Where is the evidence?” Mr Olukoyede said.

He added, “That is why we built a Gift and Hospitality Policy. Any asset above a set threshold must be declared and registered. The law permits certain traditional gifts; we define which ones you may accept and which you may not. We renamed the Department of Internal Affairs to the Department of Ethics and Integrity because the work it does is internal cleansing.”
