The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Sokoto State Council, has mourned the death of its General Secretary, Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja, describing his passing as a painful and irreplaceable loss to the labour movement in Nigeria and Africa.
Ugboaja died on August 22 at about 2:00 p.m. after a prolonged illness.
In a condolence statement signed by the State Secretary of the NLC, Sokoto State Council, Comrade Hamisu Hussaini Yanduna, and made available to newsmen on Sunday, the council described the late union leader as a seasoned administrator, committed trade unionist, fearless advocate for workers’ rights, and a pillar of the labour movement.
Yanduna said Ugboaja was a man of principle who dedicated his life to the service of Nigerian workers and the advancement of organised labour.
“Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja was a principled, hardworking and committed unionist. He was a nationalist who devoted himself to the service of Nigerian workers and the advancement of the labour movement,” Yanduna said.
He added that Ugboaja’s courage and commitment to workers’ welfare made him an influential figure within the labour movement.
“His leadership, courage and dedication to the workers’ struggle earned him the respect of workers and trade unionists across Nigeria and beyond,” he said.
Describing the death as a major setback for organised labour, Yanduna said the late General Secretary had left a vacuum that would be difficult to fill.
“His death is an irreplaceable loss to the labour movement in Nigeria and Africa. His contributions to the struggle for workers’ rights and welfare will remain a lasting legacy,” he said.
Yanduna also highlighted Ugboaja’s humility and dedication to duty, noting that his absence would be deeply felt by colleagues and workers.
“His dedication, humility and service to Nigerian workers will be greatly missed. We have lost one of our finest comrades, a great administrator and a fearless advocate for workers’ rights,” he added.
The State Administrative Council and State Executive Council of the NLC Sokoto State Council extended their condolences to the NLC National President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, members of the National Administrative Council, Central Working Committee, National Executive Council, and the entire Nigerian workforce.
The council said: “We extend our deepest condolences to the National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Joe Ajaero, and to NAC, CWC and NEC members of the NLC, and by extension, the entire workforce of Nigeria, over the sudden demise of our finest comrade.”
It prayed for divine comfort for the deceased’s family and for eternal rest for Ugboaja.
“We pray that Almighty God will comfort his family and grant him eternal rest,” the council said.
Ugboaja’s death has been described as a significant loss to organised labour, coming after years of service devoted to workers’ welfare, labour rights and national development.
