Namibia’s U/19 women’s cricket team, the Capricorn Eagles, are travelling to Tanzania to compete in the Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifiers, scheduled for 30 August to 5 September 2026.
The team was officially sent off yesterday at the Namibia Cricket Ground in Windhoek as they prepare to battle for a place at the 2027 Women’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh and Nepal. Namibia will compete alongside Uganda, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Rwanda, Kenya, Malawi and hosts Tanzania. The eight participating teams will be divided into two groups, with the tournament winners securing qualification for the World Cup.
Cricket Namibia chief executive officer Johan Muller said the tour was made possible through the support of sponsors and corporate partners, ensuring that financial circumstances do not prevent selected players from representing the country.
He congratulated the players on reaching the continental qualifiers and encouraged them to make the most of the opportunity, both on and off the field. “It will make an impact in your life, not just as a cricket player but also as a human being, and it will contribute to your growth as a player,” he said.
Head coach Tangeni Lungameni said the team has used training camps on the coast and in Windhoek to prepare for the tournament and ensure the players get sufficient game time. “We expect to do well at the qualifiers.
We’re looking to go over there and win every game that we can and then obviously try and qualify for the World Cup,” Lungameni said.
The Capricorn Eagles will now look to translate their preparations into performances when the competition gets underway in Tanzania. Player Alexa Foster said the team was excited about the challenge after working hard through several training camps. “We are definitely looking forward to playing against different countries. We’ll just try our best and enjoy every opportunity,” Foster said.
