LADYSMITH, KwaZulu-Natal — The ongoing Ladysmith water crisis has now stretched into its ninth week, leaving communities, critical infrastructure, and local enterprises without a reliable water supply. The severe shortage has heavily impacted schools, a local hospital, police stations, and the court precinct, while households and businesses in the area continue to grapple with the devastating daily effects of the dry taps.
Local Entrepreneurs Step In to Fill the Gap
In the Ezakheni township, the lack of municipal water has forced residents to rely on private initiatives. A local entrepreneur, operates a water purification and bottling business specifically designed to alleviate the community’s burden.
He explains that he established the purification plant in response to the long-standing water challenges in the area. Beyond providing drinking water, his business has become a critical resource for basic hygiene. Many residents purchase purified water from him simply to bathe their children, as the inconsistent tap water has been known to cause severe skin rashes and conditions. Furthermore, he notes that the untreated tap water has been linked to stomach illnesses and bacterial infections, prompting him to keep his business open to help the community even when his regular operations are closed.
Residents Demand Higher Government Intervention
The prolonged nature of the shortage has pushed residents to their limits. A local resident, emphasizes that the continuous interruptions have persisted for far too long and are severely compromising the community’s health and dignity.
He stresses that access to clean, safe water is a fundamental human right necessary for survival and disease prevention. She expresses deep frustration over what she describes as severe neglect of the area by local authorities. According to the resident, previous community marches and protests have been completely ignored, and formal complaints lodged with the district municipality are routinely filed away without any actionable feedback or resolution.
Consequently, residents are now urgently calling for direct intervention from higher tiers of government, including the local Members of the Executive Council (MEC) and national government departments, to step in and resolve the emergency.
Municipality Relies on Interim Tanker Solutions
In response to the growing emergency, the uThukela District Municipality has deployed water tankers to the affected areas. The municipality states that these tankers are being utilized as an interim measure while engineers and officials work to find and implement a long-term, sustainable solution to the infrastructure failures.
However, for the residents and business owners of Ezakheni, water tankers are not an acceptable permanent fix. The community maintains that until reliable, clean tap water is flowing directly into their homes and public facilities, the crisis remains unresolved.
