KILIMANJARO: MINISTER of State in the President’s Office – Youth Development, Joel Nanauka, has pledged the government’s continued commitment to developing the sports sector, citing its role in nurturing talent, promoting cultural diversity and strengthening national unity.
Nanauka made the remarks while closing the inaugural Koola Cup football tournament in Vunjo Constituency, Moshi District, Kilimanjaro Region, over the weekend.
He said sports provide a powerful platform for bringing people from different backgrounds together, breaking down social, economic, tribal and political barriers, particularly among young people.
“Sports is one of the world’s most powerful tools for social cohesion, dissolving cultural barriers and uniting people, especially the youth,” he said.
Nanauka added that sports contribute to talent development, improved health and keeping young people away from negative influences, while creating opportunities for communities to unite around shared goals.
“It is due to these facts that the government will continue to collaborate with various stakeholders in developing this sector,” he said.

He commended Vunjo Member of Parliament Enock Zadock Koola and the tournament’s organising committee for establishing the competition, urging them to ensure it becomes a sustainable platform for identifying and nurturing emerging talent.
Nanauka also called for the tournament to expand beyond men’s football in future editions to include women’s football and other sporting disciplines, allowing more young people to participate and showcase their abilities.
Koola said the competition was established to give young people an opportunity to demonstrate their talent while fostering unity among them. He commended all 16 participating teams, particularly the eventual champions.
Moshi Rural MP Morris Makoi also hailed Koola for initiating the tournament, saying it had helped bring young people together and encouraged them to engage in activities that benefit their communities.
