Lazio midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru has sustained a first- or second-degree tear in his right thigh and is expected to be sidelined for at least three weeks, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The 25-year-old Nigerian international picked up the injury during Lazio’s 1-0 Serie A victory over Bologna at the Renato Dall’Ara on Monday and was forced off in the 54th minute. He was replaced by Davide Frattesi, who scored the only goal of the game five minutes later.
According to Il Messaggero and La Lazio Siamo Noi, medical tests confirmed the extent of the injury, which is expected to keep the midfielder out of action for several weeks.
Dele-Bashiru had been handed a starting role by Gennaro Gattuso after an encouraging performance in Lazio’s Coppa Italia defeat to Mantova, but his early-season progress has now been interrupted by the setback.
The midfielder is expected to miss Lazio’s home clash with Genoa on August 30, as well as their following Serie A fixtures against Udinese on September 7 and AC Milan on September 13.
He is also a doubt for the trip to Venezia on September 19, depending on the progress of his recovery.
The injury could also affect his availability for Nigeria’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, with the Super Eagles scheduled to face Madagascar on September 23 and Guinea-Bissau on September 27.
A three-week recovery period would take Dele-Bashiru to around mid-September, potentially giving him a chance of returning before Nigeria’s qualifiers. However, a longer recovery could see him miss either or both matches.
