Four Years Too Short – J.A. Kufuor Pushes 5-Year Term, Breaks Ranks With NPP And Supports Mahama
Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has backed a proposal for John Dramani Mahama and key policy makers to extend Ghana’s presidential term from four to five years, despite opposition from his own party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
In an exclusive interview with JoyNews’ Evans Mensah, Mr Kufuor argued that the current four-year term is too short for any government to fully implement its policies and development projects.
Four years is too short for a young nation that is trying to develop, he said, speaking from practical experience.
According to him, the fourth year of every government is inevitably consumed by electioneering, leaving little room for governance.
Fourth year is an election year, election year anywhere in the world is a mud year, everybody is going around promising and talking, he noted.
He proposed that a five-year term would allow governments to devote four full years to its development agenda, with the fifth year dedicated to campaign activities.
Mr Kufuor clarified that his proposal is not an attempt to extend his own stay in office, noting he first raised it in his last State of the Nation Address.
I believe in the two terms, but four years for a developing young country like ours… it was my last state of the nation address that I brought it up, I didn’t say it to lengthen my stay, he said.
He added that now I say five years, if for whatever reason my party says no, that is their point of view.
