US Green Card Lottery 2027: What Kenyan Applicants Must Get Right to Avoid Disqualification

Kenyans hoping to move to the United States through the Green Card Lottery have been warned to pay close attention to their applications, as mistakes involving personal details, photographs and family information could jeopardise their chances of obtaining permanent residence.

The Diversity Visa (DV) Programme offers eligible applicants an opportunity to apply for US immigrant visas. However, being selected does not automatically guarantee a Green Card, as applicants must still meet the programme’s requirements and complete the necessary immigration procedures.

The DV-2027 registration period has faced delays, creating uncertainty among prospective applicants. On October 16, 2026, immigration law firm Fragomen reported that a US federal court had ordered the State Department to announce the registration details by October 29 and open registration by November 1, subject to the court’s order remaining in effect. Applicants should check for the latest official announcement before attempting to register.

One of the biggest mistakes applicants can make is submitting multiple entries during the same registration period. Some people believe that applying several times will increase their chances of selection, while others unknowingly allow different agents to submit entries on their behalf.

The US Department of State permits only one entry per person during each registration period. Submitting multiple entries can result in disqualification. However, eligible married couples can each submit one entry, provided they correctly include their spouse and eligible children.

Another potential problem is providing incorrect personal information. Applicants should carefully verify their names, dates of birth and other details before submitting their forms. Information should be consistent with their official records, and applicants should not assume that mistakes can always be corrected after submission.

Providing false information is even more serious. Applicants who deliberately misrepresent their circumstances or submit fraudulent documents risk disqualification and other immigration consequences. No agent can guarantee selection or legitimately improve an applicant’s chances by inventing details.

Photographs are another important part of the application. The US government has specific requirements covering image quality, background, positioning and other technical details. Applicants should use photographs that meet the official specifications rather than assuming that any passport photograph will be accepted.

Family information also requires particular attention. Applicants must disclose their eligible spouses and children as required by the programme rules. Leaving out a qualifying child, including an eligible stepchild, or failing to declare a spouse can lead to visa ineligibility.

For example, an applicant who is still legally married generally must declare their spouse even if they live separately. Similarly, eligible children must be listed even when they live with another parent or do not intend to move to the United States.

Applicants should also avoid making assumptions about their marital status while divorce proceedings are ongoing. They must provide accurate information based on their legal circumstances and the official instructions.

Kenyans preparing for the lottery should also protect their confirmation numbers and remain cautious about people claiming to have special access to the selection process. Anyone who helps complete an entry should provide truthful information, and the applicant should retain control of their application details.

The official US government website is the safest place to obtain instructions and check application information. Applicants should be wary of unofficial websites and individuals demanding money in exchange for guaranteed selection.

Although careful preparation cannot guarantee success in the lottery, avoiding preventable mistakes can help applicants protect their opportunity to pursue permanent residence in the United States.
