Moroccan Liberal Party chief quits after disappointing September 23 result

Isaac Charia has resigned as secretary-general of the Moroccan Liberal Party following what he called a “disappointing and unjustified” result in the September 23 legislative elections.

In a letter to the party’s National Council, Charia said the result did not reflect what he described as the party’s political presence, campaign activity or public response to its program and positions.

He said the decision followed “deep and responsible reflection” and was intended to allow the party’s institutions to manage the next phase.

Charia also alleged “suspicious practices” in some constituencies, particularly in northern Morocco, and said the party would file electoral appeals. He did not provide evidence in the resignation letter to establish those allegations.

The lawyer said his resignation does not amount to leaving the party. He will remain involved during the transition and continue handling administrative, legal and organizational matters until a new leadership is elected at a national congress.

Charia also linked his departure to what he described as limited prospects for political renewal and the emergence of new parties and political elites.

He is due to explain the decision further at a press conference on Saturday, October 3, at the party’s headquarters in Rabat.
