Nana Akua Addo was a bad president – Top NPP man gives his honest view

According to report by Ghbase on Monday 12, October 2026, former New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential aspirant Dr Kobina Arthur Kennedy has criticised the performance of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo during his eight year tenure, urging the party to carefully consider his role in its campaign activities ahead of the 2028 general elections.

According to Dr Arthur Kennedy, the NPP must acknowledge the possible impact of Akufo-Addo’s presidential record on the party’s electoral fortunes rather than relying solely on his past achievements or his reputation as an effective campaigner.

He argued that the party’s political strategy should focus on its future prospects and public image, suggesting that the former president should not necessarily be placed at the forefront of its campaign efforts.

“Politics is about the future. So when somebody becomes toxic, you put him in the background,” Dr Arthur Kennedy stated during an interview on TV3.

His comments reflect concerns about how the former president’s administration may influence public perceptions of the NPP as the party prepares for another electoral contest in 2028. The remarks also raise questions about the extent to which the party should rely on prominent figures from its previous administration when presenting its message to voters.

Dr Arthur Kennedy drew a distinction between Akufo-Addo’s personal qualities and his performance as president. While acknowledging the former president’s abilities as a political communicator, he maintained that his leadership record should be assessed separately from his campaigning skills.

“He can read a speech better than virtually every politician in Ghana’s history except one. But he was a bad president,” he said.

The former presidential aspirant’s assessment suggests that the NPP needs to undertake a candid evaluation of its previous administration and consider how its record may shape the party’s political positioning in the coming years.

As the 2028 elections approach, the party is expected to face questions about its past performance, leadership decisions and policy record. Dr Arthur Kennedy’s remarks add to the ongoing debate within the NPP about how it can rebuild public confidence and determine the roles former leaders should play in its future political activities.

His position is that the party should prioritise its future direction and carefully assess the political implications of placing Akufo-Addo at the centre of its campaign.
