NNPC Reports N4.61trn Revenue, N509bn Profit As Oil Sales Barely Increase In September

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited reported N4.61 trillion in revenue and N509 billion in profit after tax in September 2026, despite a marginal 0.29% increase in crude oil and condensate sales during the month.

The company’s latest Monthly Operations and Financial Report, released on November 3, showed that crude oil and condensate sales rose by just 70,000 barrels to 24.63 million barrels in September, compared with 24.56 million barrels in August.

The sharp contrast between NNPC’s financial performance and marginal growth in oil sales suggests that factors beyond production volumes contributed to its earnings. However, the company did not provide sufficient details to establish the extent of those contributions.

According to the report reviewed by Investors King, September’s revenue translated into an after-tax profit margin of approximately 11.05%, meaning the company retained about N11 for every N100 generated in revenue.

However, NNPC did not provide a breakdown of operating expenses, production costs, financing charges or revenue contributions from its various business segments in the published September summary.

This makes it difficult to determine how much of the company’s profitability came from crude oil sales, natural gas operations, petroleum product trading or other activities.

A closer examination of the operational figures showed that crude oil sales increased from 23.57 million barrels in August to 23.64 million barrels in September, while condensate sales remained unchanged at approximately 990,000 barrels.

Combined crude oil and condensate sales were also 12.8% below the 28.23 million barrels recorded in June, despite the improvement in September’s financial results.

The disparity is important because higher revenue does not necessarily indicate increased production efficiency or stronger underlying profitability, particularly for an integrated energy company whose earnings can be influenced by commodity prices, exchange rates and trading activities.

NNPC’s total hydrocarbon production increased by approximately 1% to 3.04 million barrels of oil equivalent per day in September, compared with 3.01 million barrels per day in August.

Of the September total, crude oil accounted for approximately 1.45 million barrels per day, condensate contributed 244,000 barrels per day, while natural gas represented the equivalent of 1.34 million barrels per day.

The company attributed the production improvement largely to the restart of operations at Obodo Oil Mining Lease 150 and other producing assets.

Nevertheless, total hydrocarbon production remained below the 3.07 million barrels of oil equivalent per day recorded in May and June.

NNPC acknowledged that production continued to face disruptions from equipment failures, flowline leaks, community protests, storage limitations, subsurface challenges and interruptions to export infrastructure.

These operational difficulties suggest that sustaining production growth remains a challenge, even as the company reports substantial monthly earnings.

Natural gas operations also recorded a modest improvement during September.

Gas production increased by approximately 1.4% to 7,789 million standard cubic feet per day, compared with 7,680 million standard cubic feet per day in August.

Gas sales rose by 1.2% to 4,793 million standard cubic feet per day from 4,737 million standard cubic feet per day.

However, September’s gas sales remained approximately 5.3% below the 5,059 million standard cubic feet per day recorded in March, indicating that the recovery had yet to restore sales to their earlier peak.

Beyond production and sales, NNPC disclosed that cumulative statutory payments to the government reached N11.14 trillion between January and September 2026.

The payments represent the company’s reported statutory obligations over the nine-month period and should not be confused with its after-tax profit or dividend distributions.

The company also reported petrol availability of 54% across NNPC Retail stations nationwide, although it did not provide sufficient details to establish how the indicator was calculated or how it compared with August.

On infrastructure development, NNPC confirmed that the Obiafu-Obrikom-Oben (OB3) gas pipeline’s River Niger crossing had been commissioned and operationalised, while the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) gas pipeline was 95% complete.

The company said work was continuing towards achieving early gas delivery to Abuja before the end of 2026.

Despite the positive financial results, the limited disclosures in the September report leave important questions about the sustainability and composition of NNPC’s earnings.

In particular, the absence of detailed financial statements prevents an independent assessment of whether the N509 billion profit was driven primarily by improved operating performance, favourable market conditions or contributions from other business segments.

NNPC also cautioned that its production, sales and financial figures were provisional and subject to reconciliation with relevant stakeholders.

For investors and other stakeholders, the central issue is therefore not simply the size of the company’s reported profit but whether stronger earnings can be sustained alongside higher production volumes, improved operational reliability and greater financial transparency.
