Tom Skerritt Dies at 93: Life and Career of the “Alien” and “Top Gun” Star

Tom Skerritt, the Emmy-winning actor who spent more than six decades playing the steady, dry-humoured authority figure on screen, has died at 93. His family said he died of natural causes on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. The Hollywood Reporter placed his death in Seattle, the city he had made his home base for years.

Skerritt was the doomed captain of the Nostromo in Alien, the flight instructor Viper in Top Gun and the small-town sheriff Jimmy Brock in Picket Fences. His publicist confirmed the news to media outlets on Thursday.

Family statement: “humour, curiosity, wisdom, generosity”

In a statement shared with several outlets, including People and Extra, the family said the world knew Tom Skerritt through his acting, while they knew him for his humour, curiosity, wisdom and generosity. The statement added that he cared deeply about storytelling, service, veterans, the natural world and helping other people find their own voices.

He leaves behind his wife, Julie Tokashiki, whom he married in 1998. He also leaves five children (Andy, Erin, Matt, Collin and Emiko), five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Some early reports listed four children, but the family’s own statement names five.

Thomas Roy Skerritt was born on August 25, 1933, in Detroit. His father ran a small business, and his mother kept the home. He had two brothers and a sister who died in childhood, according to the Associated Press.

After high school, he joined the US Air Force and served four years, including time at Bergstrom Air Force Base in Texas. He then used the GI Bill to study at Wayne State University and later UCLA. A viewing of Citizen Kane pushed him toward filmmaking, and he went to Los Angeles with the idea of directing. A stage production of The Rainmaker put him in front of the right people instead.

His screen debut came in 1962 in War Hunt, a low-budget Korean War drama. The film marked the first screen appearances of Skerritt, Robert Redford, Sydney Pollack and Francis Ford Coppola. Skerritt and Redford had gone after the same lead part, and Redford got it.

The two stayed close for life. Decades later, Redford, by then a director, gave Skerritt the role of the stern minister and fly-fishing devotee in A River Runs Through It. Redford died in 2025.

Fame did not come quickly. Skerritt spent his early years in Hollywood on television, appearing in shows such as My Three Sons, Combat! and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour. On film he took small parts for Robert Altman in MASH* and Thieves Like Us. He also played a motorcycle cop in Hal Ashby’s Harold and Maude.

His breakthrough came with The Turning Point in 1977, in which he played Shirley MacLaine’s husband. The role won him a National Board of Review award.

“Alien” and “Top Gun”

In 1979, Skerritt played Captain Dallas in Ridley Scott’s Alien. He became the first member of the crew to hunt the creature through the ship’s air ducts, armed with a flamethrower. He later told the Seattle Times that he liked the script because the male lead vanishes and the woman becomes the hero. Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley then took over the franchise.

In 1986, he played Commander Mike “Viper” Metcalf in Top Gun, the tough instructor who tells Tom Cruise’s class of Navy pilots that second place earns nothing. It remains one of the most quoted authority-figure roles of the decade.

“Picket Fences” and the Emmy

On television, his defining role was Sheriff Jimmy Brock in David E. Kelley’s Picket Fences, which ran on CBS from 1992 to 1996. The show was set in the oddball town of Rome, Wisconsin, and Kathy Baker played his wife, the town doctor. The series won 14 Emmys, including one for Skerritt as outstanding lead actor in a drama series in 1993. He was nominated twice, both times for the show.

He later said the writing was the magic of the series, and that he had not set out to do a series at all. Kathy Baker’s casting made him say yes.

The rest of a long résumé

Skerritt was rarely out of work. His other credits include:

• Sally Field’s husband in

  Steel Magnolias

• A scheming opportunist standing in Jodie Foster’s way in

  Contact

• A recurring role as Evan Drake on

  Cheers

• William Walker on

  Brothers and Sisters

  and Jimmy Ford on

  Leverage

He made his Broadway debut in 2013 in A Time to Kill, and in 2004 he narrated Our Town at Seattle’s Intiman Theatre. He directed and starred in the 1997 television movie Divided by Hate. He had once hoped to direct full time, and he said later that he had no regrets about how things turned out.

A writer once described him as a character actor locked in a leading man’s body. He told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer in 1997 that he loved the description.

A late leading role, and work beyond the screen

At 88, Skerritt took what is widely described as his first major film lead in East of the Mountains (2021), playing a retired heart surgeon with terminal cancer. The film earned a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, better than any of his famous earlier titles. He told AARP the project grew out of his push to build a working film industry in Washington state. He had also helped found a film school in Seattle with Stewart Stern, the screenwriter of Rebel Without a Cause.

He backed veterans’ causes as well. In 2012, he co-founded the Red Badge Project with Army veteran Evan Bailey. The group helps wounded veterans with PTSD tell their stories through writing. He also worked with a number of environmental charities after A River Runs Through It.

How he will be remembered

NPR described him as an actor who played dads, cops and commanding officers, and noted how often the word “rugged” came up when people talked about him. The family’s own description is simpler: a curious, funny and generous man who spent his later years helping other people tell their stories.
