Álvaro Arbeloa Under Fire as Fulham Collapse Against Ipswich and Winless Run Reaches Six Games

Fulham manager Álvaro Arbeloa has insisted he is not afraid of losing his job, despite his side suffering another damaging result after conceding twice late in a defeat to Ipswich Town.

The loss extended Fulham’s winless run to six matches and intensified questions about whether Arbeloa can turn the club’s fortunes around. Although his team showed promising attacking play for much of the contest, another late collapse proved costly.

Fulham’s recurring inability to protect leads and hold on to results has become a major concern, placing further scrutiny on the manager as the club searches for much-needed points.

Arbeloa Rejects Fears Over His Managerial Future

Speaking after the defeat, Arbeloa maintained that his focus remains on Fulham’s league position rather than his own future.

“I never worry about my position,” he said. “I don’t feel fear. You cannot be a coach if you feel it. You have to work, take the decision and you need to show confidence to your players.”

The manager added that he remained pleased with several aspects of his players’ performances, while acknowledging the difficulty of their situation.

“I am so happy with many things that they are doing. I know it is not easy for them,” Arbeloa said.

He stressed that the club’s position was the priority, admitting that despite the run consisting of only six games, Fulham urgently needed points.

Late Collapse Against Ipswich Deepens Concerns

For much of the match at Portman Road, Fulham appeared capable of ending their difficult run.

They moved the ball effectively, created opportunities and took the lead through Ryan Sessegnon, who collected Issa Diop’s headed clearance near the edge of the penalty area before driving a shot into the bottom corner.

However, the promising display unravelled in the closing stages.

Abdoul Ouattara levelled the score with a powerful left-footed strike in the 88th minute before Dara O’Shea completed Ipswich’s comeback during stoppage time.

The two goals came just four minutes apart, turning a potentially valuable result into another setback for Arbeloa’s side.

Fulham’s Late-Game Problems Become a Major Warning Sign

The defeat highlighted a recurring weakness that has become increasingly difficult for Fulham to ignore.

In four of their previous five matches, they had conceded decisive goals during the final 15 minutes, raising concerns about the team’s ability to maintain concentration and withstand pressure late in games.

Against Ipswich, Fulham appeared to lose momentum as the match approached its conclusion. Their defensive organisation weakened, while their confidence seemed to diminish after Ouattara’s equaliser.

The pattern has placed additional pressure on Arbeloa, with questions emerging over whether the team can develop the resilience needed to secure results consistently.

Arbeloa’s Appointment Comes Under Renewed Scrutiny

Fulham took a risk by appointing Arbeloa, whose senior managerial experience before taking charge consisted of a brief interim spell at Real Madrid.

During his first press conference, the Portuguese coach called for patience, pointing to the challenging sequence of fixtures awaiting his team at the beginning of the season.

However, the club’s recent results have made that request increasingly difficult to sustain.

The period following the international break had been viewed as an important test, with Fulham scheduled to face all three promoted sides. The matches offered an opportunity to assess whether their early struggles were largely the result of difficult opposition or signs of a more serious problem.

The defeat to Ipswich has increased the pressure on the manager to demonstrate that his side can turn encouraging passages of play into positive results.

Upcoming Matches Could Shape Fulham’s Season

Fulham now face two important fixtures against Hull City and Coventry City, matches that could carry significant implications for their season.

With the club still searching for a win, the upcoming games may prove crucial in determining whether Arbeloa receives more time to implement his approach.

Failure to collect points from those encounters could intensify concerns about Fulham’s position and the club’s decision to appoint an inexperienced manager.

Although the team has shown that it can create chances and play attractive football, those qualities will count for little if late defensive lapses continue to undermine its performances.

Arbeloa Faces Pressure to Turn Performances Into Points

Arbeloa has publicly rejected the suggestion that he fears for his job, but Fulham’s results have placed his position under increasing scrutiny.

The loss to Ipswich was particularly damaging because his team had appeared capable of securing a positive result for nearly 90 minutes before surrendering its advantage.

With the winless run now standing at six matches, the manager faces a growing challenge to restore confidence, improve his side’s late-game discipline and deliver the points Fulham need.

The forthcoming fixtures against Hull and Coventry could provide an opportunity to halt the decline. If the struggles continue, however, Fulham may have to reconsider whether Arbeloa is the right person to lead the club through the remainder of the campaign.
