Big Six Deserve Their Place, but Their Individual Achievements Must Be Examined—Dr. Collins Rawlings

Dr. Collins Rawlings Nunyomameh, Acting Executive Director of the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, has stated that while the Big Six deserve their honoured place in Ghana’s history, there is a need to disentangle them and examine their individual achievements, amid calls to feature the Independence Declaration picture on new banknotes.

His remarks come as discussions continue over the representation of Ghana’s founding leaders on the country’s currency. Dr. Nunyomameh acknowledged the significance of the Big Six as a collective, recognising their contributions to the struggle for independence. However, he argued that it is important to look beyond the group as a whole and assess each member’s distinct role and accomplishments.

According to him, disentangling the Big Six would allow for a more nuanced understanding of their individual contributions and help Ghanaians appreciate the unique legacy of each leader. This, he suggested, is particularly relevant in the context of decisions about how they are commemorated on national symbols such as banknotes.

Dr. Nunyomameh’s comments reflect a desire for historical accuracy and fairness in recognising the founding fathers. By calling for a closer look at their individual achievements, he is advocating for a more detailed and thoughtful approach to how Ghana’s history is represented and remembered.

His statement adds a valuable perspective to the ongoing conversation about the Independence Declaration picture and its place on new banknotes, suggesting that any decision should be informed by a clear understanding of the contributions of each member of the Big Six.
