Gary Neville is feeling more positive about Manchester United’s outlook following the draw against Leeds.
Manchester United’s 1-1 draw against Leeds was a disappointing result, but it was not an awful one. Speaking after the game, Harry Maguire said that nobody could question the team’s fight.
Former star Gary Neville acknowledged the efforts of the players too, and noted how the team’s travelling supporters applauded the players at the final whistle.
Neville told Sky Sports: “Manchester United fans have stayed behind at the end there today and clapped Michael Carrick and the players.
“That’s not because because they think that that’s the best team in the world, those Manchester United, because they can recognise that they’ve actually gone out there today and they’ve put the they’ve put a shift in.”
The reaction is a turnaround from the booing that was heard at Old Trafford a week ago when United stumbled to a draw with Tottenham.
Neville has been highly critical of Manchester United in recent weeks, but recognised that this performance against Leeds did not justify another tirade, despite the club’s poor league position.
He said: “I’ve leathered Manchester United. I battered them in the last few weeks. I won’t I will not sit there and watch a Manchester United team not work hard and not run and not compete and not fight for every football. But I can live with that.”
Michael Carrick
Michael Carrick’s postgame comments also took note of a strong effort from his side. Anything less in a tough away atmosphere at Elland Road would have meant certain defeat.
Carrick said: “There was definitely commitment. It had to be there today. I didn’t doubt that. I was looking forward to the game to see that, there was definitely an edge and intensity to it.
“I spoke to the boys this morning about the history of this game, what it means to the supporters, to the football club. It definitely tests you. It wasn’t a perfect performance but there was a lot in there to show determination to get a result.”
