88,000 Inside, 6,000 Outside: FNB Stadium Boss Reveals What They Are Still Trying to Find Out

Bertie Grobbelaar, director of Stadium Management South Africa (SMSA), has disclosed that the organization is awaiting reports to determine how about 6,000 fans were left outside FNB Stadium even though thousands of other spectators were already inside.

At one of the largest athletic arenas in South Africa, the incident has sparked more concerns regarding crowd control, ticket verification, and access control. Grobbelaar claims that thousands of supporters stayed outside in the hopes of gaining entrance, but the stadium gates were eventually locked with about 88,000 people inside.

Grobbelaar told KickOff that the organization was awaiting reports that could shed light on what transpired and assist in figuring out why so many individuals couldn’t get into the stadium.

“The gates were closed with 88000 people inside the venue, and we still had about 6000 on the outside,” he said to KickOff.

The numbers have brought attention to the procedures utilised to control sizable crowds at important football games, especially when there is a very strong demand for tickets and stadium access.

Concerns about whether current ticketing policies and access processes can sufficiently accommodate fans for high-profile games have been rekindled by the circumstances.

Many football fans have to buy tickets, travel to the stadium, and get there far in advance of kickoff in order to attend a game. When supporters feel they have good reason to expect admission, it can be quite frustrating to be denied entry after making those plans.

The information that is now available, however, does not determine if the roughly 6,000 persons outside the stadium had legitimate tickets, had trouble scanning their tickets, or had other access-related issues.

The reports that stadium management is awaiting may assist answer these queries and paint a more accurate picture of the incident’s circumstances.

Overcrowding at key football games, such as the eagerly awaited Soweto Derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, has already drawn criticism to FNB Stadium.

Grobbelaar admitted in March 2026 that, despite the stadium’s intended capacity of about 89,000, over 100,000 people had entered during the February derby. Fake tickets, illegal entry attempts, and crowd congestion were also noted by stadium management as issues that needed to be addressed.

The significance of efficient ticket verification, dependable access mechanisms, and appropriate coordination between stadium officials and security staff has been brought to light by these prior instances.

Grobbelaar’s anticipated reports may be crucial to comprehending why the most recent batch of supporters stayed outside when some 88,000 others had previously inside.

Their results could potentially be used to pinpoint flaws in the admissions procedure and guide future high-attendance event management decisions.

According to the facts currently available, the exact causes of the 6,000 supporters’ predicament have not yet been made public.

The crucial question is still whether the issue was caused by crowd control issues, ticketing arrangements, access control protocols, or a combination of these.

Supporters will be waiting for stadium management to explain what transpired and what steps should be taken to avoid similar incidents at future games until the reports offer more details.
