Green Anaconda Strikes Bakkie on South African Dirt Road, Leaving Mzansi Stunned

A video showing a massive green anaconda striking at a bakkie on a rural dirt road has sparked shock and disbelief among South Africans, with social media users questioning how the enormous snake came to be in the country.

The footage was shared by South African snake-catching page Slangboere on 30 September 2026 and quickly attracted attention online. Recorded from inside a moving vehicle, the video shows a bakkie travelling along a dirt road before passing close to a huge snake lying near the roadside.

As the vehicle approached, the reptile suddenly lunged towards it, creating a dramatic moment that caught those watching off guard.

Slangboere identified the snake as a green anaconda and also addressed speculation that the footage could have been created or manipulated using artificial intelligence. According to the page, the video was genuine and showed a real green anaconda.

The discovery was particularly surprising because green anacondas are native to South America and are not indigenous to South Africa. The exact location where the footage was recorded was not revealed, leaving viewers to speculate about how the snake ended up there.

Some social media users suggested that it could have escaped from captivity or been kept illegally as a pet, although there was no confirmation of either possibility.

The snake’s sudden attack also generated discussion about its behaviour. Slangboere explained that the anaconda would not necessarily recognise the approaching bakkie as a vehicle. Instead, the large moving object could have appeared to be a threat, prompting the snake to react defensively.

Green anacondas are powerful constrictors and are regarded as the heaviest snakes in the world by body mass. Their muscular bodies and considerable size make them capable of overpowering large prey.

The unusual encounter prompted plenty of humour online, with commenters joking about the snake’s movements, its possible origins and even whether it had somehow escaped from an AI-generated scene.

Despite the excitement surrounding the footage, important questions remain unanswered. The location of the encounter has not been confirmed, and there is no evidence establishing whether the snake escaped from captivity or how long it may have been in the area.

For now, the video remains an extraordinary sight that has combined fear, curiosity and humour, while leaving social media users debating the mystery behind the unexpected appearance of a South American giant on a South African dirt road.
