TRA urges new firms to tap one-year tax relief

BUKOBA: THE Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) in Kagera Region has urged new business owners to register for Taxpayer Identification Numbers (TIN) to benefit from a one-year tax exemption announced in the 2026/27 government budget.

TRA Kagera Deputy Regional Manager, Mr Estomih Mossi, made the call during a consultative meeting with leaders of the Tanzania Business Community (JWT) and traders held recently in Bukoba Municipality.

He said the initiative seeks to spur business growth, encourage entrepreneurs to formalise their operations, widen the tax base and create a more enabling business environment. Mr Mossi also urged taxpayers to utilise Business Facilitation Desks, which offer guidance, resolve business challenges and link traders with financial institutions.

He reaffirmed TRA’s commitment to working with JWT to promote compliance, enhance transparency and support legitimate trade. The official commended taxpayers for voluntary compliance and called on new entrepreneurs to seize the opportunity presented by the oneyear tax relief.

Mr Mossi stressed that continued engagement with traders is key to building a fair and predictable business environment, noting that tax compliance is vital for national economic growth.

JWT Chairman, Mr Nicholaus Basimaki, welcomed the dialogue, pledging traders’ cooperation with TRA in combating smuggling. He said illegal trade undermines fair competition and hurts compliant businesses, urging traders to adhere to tax laws for the country’s long-term development.

Kagera Region has several border entry points, including Murusagamba, Kabanga and Rusumo (Ngara District); Murongo and Kaisho (Karagwe); Mutukula, Kanyigo, Kashenye and Kyaka (Missenyi); and Bugabo and Rubafu (Bukoba District).
